Pioneers Stumble on the Road Falling to Cardinals

Wheeling, W.Va. –  Glenville State stumbled on the road Saturday at Wheeling University falling by a final score of 78-67. The Pioneers are now 13-11 and 10-8 in conference play.

Hegel Augustin led the Pioneers with 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

How it Happened

First Half:

The contest began early as the game was knotted at six all before Wheeling would get ahead of the Pioneers at 12-8.

Wheeling would use that momentum to go on a short 7-2 run that extended their lead to 19-10.

Najee Scott would add a layup with Tyvon Taylor following with a jumper to pull the Pioneers within five.

Wheeling would then extend their lead with four points as Steven Verplacnken hit a bucket from deep as GSC trails 23-17.

Hegel Augustin then hit a jumper as the Cardinals responded with a dunk. Augustin at that point found Seth Fallon on the floor to sink a three ball to pull within three.

The Cardinals then swayed away from the herd on a short 8-2 run that would put WU up 33-24. Phil Bledsoe added a layup to slowdown the Cardinals though sinking two shot from the stripe.

Phil Bledsoe and Noah Frampton connected from deep that pulled Glenville behind three. Bledsoe then would add a layup to end that half trailing just 34-35.

The Pioneers shot 43% from the floor and 4-for-11 from deep where the Cardinals shot 48% from the field and just 1-for-7 from behind the arc.

Second Half:

Bledsoe began the second half with a jumper to regain their lead as Augustin would add a layup to lead 38-35.

Wheeling responded on a 13-2 run to take the lead at 48-40 before the Pioneers etched back at their deficit with a pair from the stipe by Bledsoe and Verplancken's jumper to trail 46-50.

The Cardinals then made separation as they went on a 20 to 15 run as Wheeling held a 70-61 lead with 1:25 left in the contest.

The Pioneers tried to make a late run as Hegel Augustin netted a three-pointer pulling GSC within eight at 72-64. Wheeling then outscored GSC 6-3 in the last 30 seconds of the game as GSC fell on the road 78-67.

Inside the Box

Glenville State finished the contest shooting 36% from the field and 26% from behind the arc. Wheeling shot 50% from the floor but just went 1-for-10 from deep for 10% in the game.

Wheeling won the rebounding battle out rebounding the Pioneers by 11, 43-32. The Cardinals had a big advantage on the inside outscoring the Pioneers 48 to 26 in the paint.

Glenville State had three players in double figures with Hegel Augustin netting 18 points. Phil Bledsoe chipped in with 15 points and 13 rebounds posting his 12th double-double of the season. Steven Verplacken finished with 14 points.

Wheeling had four players in double figures with Jordan Reid scoring a game-high 21 points.
