Softball Drops Home Opener to the Cavaliers of Walsh

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneers dropped their home opener of the 2020 season the Cavaliers of Walsh University on a chilly day at the Sue Morris Sports Complex.

Inside The Box Score

Jerri Potter finished the two games going 2-for-8 with two RBI's and a home run while Peyton Werntz went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI's. Also for the Lady Pioneers Catherine Pelfrey finished the day 1-for-5 with an RBI and Karra Smith went 1-5 with two RBI's.

Tori Ward pitched 4.0 innings in game one allowing three hits, two runs, while striking out three batters.

In game two, Celina Maberto pitched 5.1 innings allowing 10 hits, six runs, and two strike outs.

How It Happened

Game One

Glenville State recorded its first hit of the season and the game in the second inning as Peyton Werntz doubled to left field. Kierson Tavares then came in to pinch run and Catherine Pelfrey would bring her home with a single to center field. Then later in the inning Paranda Uber would drive in Pelfrey as the Lady Pioneers took 2-0 lead.

Walsh would not tally their first hit until the third however they would leave the runner stranded on base. Glenville State then added another run in the bottom of third as Mackenzie Martinelli stole home as GSC now led 3-0.

The Cavaliers then got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning as Arianna Ott hit a two run homer to center field but the Lady Pioneers still held a one run lead 3-2.

Jerri Potter gave GSC some separation in the bottom of the fourth as she hit a two run home run to center field driving in Catherine Pelfrey as the Lady Pioneer now led 5-2.

Again Walsh would battle back as they added two more runs off of two hits in the top of the fifth as they again trailed by one, 5-4.

Jump to the seventh inning and Walsh would take their first lead of the game at 7-5 as they tallied three hits while scoring three runs.

Then in the bottom of the inning Glenville State would have three up and three down as they dropped the home opener to Walsh 7-5.  

Game Two

Walsh had the bats going in game two of the afternoon as they tallied two hits scoring one run as the Lady Pioneers trailed 1-0.

Glenville State then responded in the bottom of the inning as they took a 3-1 lead over the Cavaliers. The scoring started as Karra Smith doubled to left field scoring Mackenzie Martinelli and Jerri Potter. Then later in the inning Peyton Werntz singled scoring Karra Smith.

Walsh came back in the top of the second and pulled within one run, 3-2, as Kalin Kovach hit a solo home run to center field.

The Lady Pioneers added to their lead in the third inning when true freshman Peyton Werntz smashed a two run home run as they took a 5-2 lead heading into the fourth.

In the sixth, Walsh took the lead as Claire Mewhinney hit a solo homer to left field. Then later Emma Bobey had an RBI single scoring Sarah Moats and Ariana Ott had a base clearing double and Jessie Rock then ground out to first base but not before a run crossed the plate as GSC fell behind 7-5.

GSC would go scoreless in the bottom of the inning and then the Lady Pioneers held Walsh scoreless in the top of the seventh as we headed into the bottom of the inning trailing 7-5.

However, in the bottom of the inning GSC would have three strike outs as they fell 7-5.

Coming Up

Next up for the Lady Pioneers they will host Shepherd University at 1 p.m. on Saturday and then Mercyhurst at 3 p.m. and then on Sunday they host Mansfield at 1 p.m. and Mercyhurst again at 3 p.m.
