Late Comeback Falls Short as GSC Drops Final Regular Season Contest

Athens, W.Va. – Glenville State would comeback after trailing by 21 points in the third but a last second shot from Blaize Burgess came up short as GSC (23-5, 19-3 MEC) dropped just their third conference game of the year to Concord (19-8, 15-6 MEC), 103-102.

Ty Armstrong scored a season and game-high 33 points going 12-for-21 from the floor.

How It Happened
 
First Quarter:
 
Glenville State started the contest on a 9-2 run led by Ty Armstrong's five points at the 7:38 minute mark. Two more baskets by Armstrong would extend GSC's lead to 13-3 with 7:02 to play.
 
The onslaught would continue for the Lady Pioneers as they extended their lead to 15 points leading 20-5 with under-five minutes to play in the quarter.
 
However, Concord would come back and ended the quarter on a 23-11 run as GSC held a 31-28 lead.
 
Second Quarter:
 
A layup by CU's Riley Fitzwater would pull the Mountain Lions within one, 31-30. Then both teams found themselves tied up at 33 all after a Madison May Free-throw with just under seven minutes until the break.
 
Concord then went on a 7-2 run as they took a 40-35 lead with five minutes left.
 
The Mountain Lions then ended the quarter on a 14-9 run as they held a 10-point lead over the Lady Pioneers at the half, 54-44.
 
Concord shot 63% from the floor and 33% from deep going 3-for-9. Glenville State shot 40% from the field and went 5-for-20 from deep for 25%.
 
Ty Armstrong had a team-high 11 points for GSC in the first half.
 
Third Quarter:
 
The Mountain Lions came out firing on all cylinders as they went on a 19-12 run as the Lady Pioneers trailed 73-56 at the media timeout.
 
At the end of the third GSC would find themselves trailing by 16 points 84-68.
 
Fourth Quarter:
 
GSC would come out in the fourth and make a small run however the Mountain Lions would counter and then would eventually go on a 14-12 run as the Lady Pioneers trailed 98-80 at the media timeout.
 
The Lady Pioneers then cut the lead to 12 as they made a small 6-0 run as they trailed 98-86.
 
Then jump to late in the fourth with just 36 seconds left GSC would cut the lead to just two as Zakiyah Winfield layup went throw the hoop making it 102-100. Then a steal by Winfield and an Armstrong layup would knot the game up at 102 all with just 13 second left.
 
GSC was then forced to foul and Concord would make just 1-of-2 as they led by 103-102 with 12 seconds left and a GSC timeout. Out of the timeout GSC's would get a good look by Blaize Burgess but it wouldn't fall as GSC fell to Concord, 103-102.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
Glenville State shot 43% from the field and 34% from deep going 13-for-38. Concord shot 66% from the floor and 43% from deep. The Mountain Lions won the rebounding battle 38-33 and CU also outscored the Lady Pioneers in the paint 68-54.
 
Glenville State had 22 fast-break points while Concord finished with 18.
 
Ty Armstrong posted 33 points for the Lady Pioneers while Zakiyah Winfield tallied 17 points, three steals, three rebounds, and three assists.
 
Emily Stoller posted 13 points and dished out five assists.
 
Madison May scored 29 points while Riley Fitzwater posted a double-double scoring 26 points and 18 rebounds.
 
Coming Up
 
Glenville State who won the MEC regular season for the fourth straight year will now prepare for the MEC Tournament this coming week in Wheeling, West Virginia. GSC who is the No. 1 seed in the tournament will play on Thursday at 6p.m. against the winner of No. 8 West Liberty/No.9 WV State.
