Wheeling, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneer basketball team defeated the West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets 124-84 in the MEC Quarterfinals. With the victory GSC (24-5) advances to the MEC Semifinals on Saturday and will take on the winner of No. 4 Concord/No. 5 Urbana.
Emily Stoller posted a game-high 25 points while
Ty Armstrong finished with 18 points.
How It Happened
First Quarter:
Emily Stoller would put up the first two-points of the tournament for the Lady Pioneers as she netted two free-throws at the 9:16 minute mark. GSC then got another quick two points on a
Kaneshia Afi rebound and put back as they led 4-0 early.
GSC then stretched their lead to 8-2 at the 8:09 mark however the Lady Pioneers then went cold as they missed their next four shoots from the field as the Yellow Jackets pulled within two at 8-6.
Then jump to the 3:30 minute mark and GSC went small on a 7-0 run as they took a 17-11 lead.
The Lady Pioneers then ended the quarter on a 14-6 run as they held a 14 points lead after one, 31-17.
Second Quarter:
Glenville State started the second on a 13-3 run as they took a 44-20 lead as
Blaize Burgess knocked down back-to-back three-pointers.
The Lady Pioneers then went on to outscore the Yellow Jackets 33-24 in the quarter as they held a 23-point lead at 64-41.
GSC shot 52% from the field and 48% from deep as they netted 12 three-pointers. WVSU shot 41% from the floor and 37% from behind the arc. Glenville State also scored 23 fast break points while
West Virginia State had just five.
Third Quarter:
West Virginia State came out firing and would outscore GSC early in the period 14-13 but then
Mashayla Cecil would drill a three-pointer as the Lady Pioneers led 82-55 with under four to play.
The Lady Pioneers would eventually go on and outscore the Yellow Jackets 31-26 in the quarter as they took 95-67 lead.
Fourth Quarter:
Glenville State came out in the fourth and netted back-to-back-to-back three-pointers as they started on a 9-0 lead to take a 98-65 lead.
Glenville State proved to be too much for Yellow Jackets as they picked up a 124-84 win as the Lady Pioneers punched their ticket to the MEC Semifinals on Saturday, March 7
th at noon.
