Wheeling, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneers (25-5) shot just 14% from deep and 31% from the field but found a way to win as they defeated the Concord University Mountain Lions 70-68 and punch their ticket to the MEC Championship game on Sunday.
This will be the third straight appearance for the Lady Pioneers in the MEC title game.
Glenville State had four players in double figures with
Blaize Burgess leading the way with 18 points.
How It Happened
First Quarter:
Concord would strike first with a rebound and put back by Riley Fitzwater however GSC would answer as
Emily Stoller netted a three as the Lady Pioneers took their first lead of the contest 3-2 at the 9:35 mark.
The Mountain Lions then went on a 15-7 run as Concord built a seven-point lead with 4:03 to play in quarter one.
Emily Stoller then caught fire as she scored seven straight points and tied the game up at 17 all with under two minutes to play.
The Lady Pioneers ended the quarter on a 12-7 run but Concord managed to hold a two-point lead at the end of one, 23-21.
Second Quarter:
Blaize Burgess got the first two point of the second with a floater in the lane as the game was tied up for the third time at 23-23.
Both teams went up and down and the Mountain Lions made a little separation as they went on an 11-6 run as they built a seven-point lead 34-27 as we went into the media timeout of the second at the 4:54 mark.
Both teams went on a scoring drought to end the half as Concord took a 36-30 lead into the half. GSC managed just nine points in the second quarter while the Mountain Lions scored just 13 points.
Glenville State shot just 14% from deep going 3-for-21 while shooting 27% from the field. Concord shot 56% from the field and 25% from deep.
Third Quarter:
GSC started the quarter with an
Emily Stoller three-pointer as they pulled within three, 36-33. The Lady Pioneers then went on 10-4 run capped off buy an old fashion three-point play from Lucy Westfall as the game was knotted up at 40-40 with 5:45 left in the quarter.
GSC then took the lead at the 4:00 minute mark 44-43 on a
Zakiyah Winfield layup. Glenville State then ended the third on a 12-7 run as they took a four-point lead into the fourth quarter, 54-50.
Fourth Quarter:
The Lady Pioneers started the fourth on a 7-4 run as they went up 61-54 at the 6:15 minute mark. Glenville State would hold a five-point lead at 64-59 at the last media timeout of the contest with under five minutes to play.
Concord would battle back and pull within one, 64-63, on two made free-throws by Riley Fitzwater with under a minute to play in the contest. But
Blaize Burgess jumper in the paint gave the Lady Pioneers a three-point lead at 66-63.
Madison May answered for Concord on the next possession with a layup pulling the Mountain Lions within one again 66-65.
Zakiyah Winfield answered with a jumper in the lane as GSC went back up by three at 68-65 with 16 seconds left.
Concord would call a timeout. After the timeout GSC forced the Mountain Lions into a turnover, in what might be the biggest turnover of the season for the Blue and White. Concord was then forced to foul and
Ty Armstrong would step to the free-throw line and drill both as Glenville State defeated Concord 70-68.
Inside The Box Score
Glenville State shot just 14% from deep going 5-for-35 and went 29-for-93 from the field for 31%. Concord finished the game shooting 52% from the field and 40% from deep.
The Lady Pioneers also managed to shot 43 more shots than Concord.
The Mountain Lions outscored GSC in the paint by just two, 40-38. Glenville State's defense forced Concord into 31 turnovers and converted them into 17 points. GSC only turned the ball over 2 times in the contest.
Blaize Burgess led GSC with 18 points while
Zakiyah Winfield posted 16points. Re'Shawna Stone scored 14 points to go along with three assists, and three steal.
Emily Stoller posted 13 points and grabbed four rebounds in the win.
Concord was led by Madison May and Riley Fitzwater as each scored 21 points. Fitzwater also grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.
