GSC Improves to 2-0 in Final Seconds Against UC

Glenville, W.Va. –  Glenville State (2-0) earns their second victory of the season in the final seconds of the contest as Nicholas Edwards drove to the basket sinking a jumper to defeat University of Charleston (0-2), 72-70.
 
Nick Edwards tallied 19 points on the night with eight assists and five steals efficiently shooting 57.6% from the field.
 
How It Happened
 
First Half:
 
UC got on the board first before John Williams and Seth Fallon connected with Hegel Augustin and Nick Edwards for three, three balls trailing just 10-9 early.
 
The Pioneers would then gain their first lead of the contest as Hegel Augustin scored a tear drop following a single hand dunk from Nick Edwards to push the Pioneers ahead 13-12.
 
UC answered back regaining their lead before Augustin found Edwards for a three ball to tie the game at 16, first of the match with 12-minutes remaining.
 
Swapping baskets, the Pioneers and Golden Eagles continue to maintain a tied contest with a dunk from John Williams and buckets by Tommy Williams and Edwards at 23 a piece.
 
From there, UC entered a short 7-2 run to lead by five at the five-minute mark. Hauling away from the Pioneers, Augustin connected with Edwards twice for back to back triples (2:17) to pull back within five, the Pioneers first basket since the 8-minute mark.
 
Before the end of the half, UC extended their lead to double digits at 41-31. The Pioneers shot just 35.3% from the floor where the Golden Eagles held significant efficiency with 58.6% from the field.
 
Second Half:
 
Seth Fallon and the Pioneers pulled back within single digits sinking a three ball after connecting with Augustin entering a 7-2 run.
 
UC added a layup before Luke LeRose and Tommy Williams found Nick Edwards and Adrian Scarborough for two Pioneer three-balls to trail just 45-44.
 
Golden Eagles ahead 47-46, LeRose then hit the fifth lead change of the contest with another bucket from deep.
 
From there, UC went on a 12-2 run to lead 59-51. The Blue and White then answered back on an 11-1 run with buckets by Edwards and Zane Desouza and three ball from J. Williams to put the Pioneers ahead again 62-60.
 
Down the stretch, GSC and UC would trade leads as J. Williams added a pair of freebies that would then put the Pioneers up by one and extended by Edwards.
 
With 17 seconds left, Hegel Augustin shot 1-for-2 at the line as UC responded with another two freebies to tie the contest for the sixth time at 70 all.
 
In the final three seconds, Nick Edwards hit a jumper to put the Pioneers ahead by two and take the contest 72-70, improving the Blue and White to 2-0 on the year.
 
 
Inside The Box Score
 
University of Charleston maintained the lead 81.5% of the contest with their largest lead of 12 points. However, Glenville State outshot the Golden Eagles from behind the line 31.6% - 27.8% and shooting 26-for-64 from the floor scoring 24 points off turnovers.
 
John Williams totaled 16 points shooting 3-for-9 from deep. Hegel Augustin followed behind with 13 points, nine rebounds and two steals.
 
University of Charleston was lead by Seth O'Neal with 21 points, six assists and three rebounds.
 
Coming Up
 
The Blue and White will return to action Wednesday, January 13th at 7:30pm in the Waco Center against Davis & Elkins College. At this time a no spectator policy will be followed at each of the 12 Mountain East Conference institutions. The league's Board of Directors will evaluate the no spectator policy no earlier than January 19, 2021.
