Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneers (1-1) fell to University of Charleston (1-1) 91-86, recording their first at home loss in the regular MEC season since 2016.
Taychaun Hubbard recorded a double-double scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds including three steals.
How It Happened
First Quarter:
The Lady Pioneers opened the contest tied at six all before the Golden Eagles slightly stowed away with a 10-6 lead.
Zakiyah Winfield and
Kaylee Pierce scored a pair from the stripe to tie the contest again at ten all. Re'Shawna Stone and
Taylor Smith then nicked two three-pointers to put the Lady Pioneers ahead 16-12.
With two minutes remaining, Stone scored from deep before UC answered back with multiple pairs from the stripe to end the first tied at 24-all.
Second Quarter:
UC took the lead in the second after being down by seven in the first. The Golden Eagles continued on an 8-2 run over the Lady Pioneers until
Mashayla Cecil's shot from behind the arc pulled GSC within five.
Victoria Brown put up a tear drop following another three ball from
Taylor Smith to re-tie the contest for the sixth time a 34 a piece.
Looking to recover the lead, K. Pierce found Cecil on the floor for scoring a bucket from deep to lead 39-36.
The Lady Pioneers tallied a five-point lead after
Vendela Danielsson knocked a three-ball from Winfield. UC inched closer adding a pair from the stripe until Stone sunk a layup ending the half 51-48.
In the half, GSC and UC tallied seven ties and six lead changes. The Lady Pioneers shot 42% from the floor and 7-for-18 behind the arc as the Golden Eagles shot 52% on the field and 0-for-4 at the three-point line.
Third Quarter:
The Golden Eagles tallied a 14-0 run until K. Pierce sunk a three ball from Cecil, and a jumper from Winfield where GSC trailed 56-65.
Shrinking the gap, Winfield and Stone added two layups to pull 65-60 with five minutes remaining in the third.
Straying away again, UC gained a 69-60 lead before
Taychaun Hubbard totaled a pair of layups along with a free ball from Winfield to pull back within four.
The Lady Pioneers ended the quarter with an eight-point deficit, 73-65.
Fourth Quarter:
UC gained a 12 point early in the fourth, as GSC pulled back within single digits with buckets by
Kaylee Pierce and Re'Shawna Stone 84-79.
Golden Eagles tallied another layup and jumper putting UC up again by seven. Stone added a three-point conversion with Winfield behind on a layup to trail just by two with two minutes remaining.
Through the final 10 seconds, UC missed a pair of freebies before the Lady Pioneers would turnover the ball to allow UC to sink a pair from the stripe falling 91-86.
Inside The Box Score
University of Charleston overpowered Glenville State inside the box, outscoring the Lady Pioneers 55.4% - 39% from the floor and 33.3% - 26.3% from behind the arc although GSC tallied 10 three-pointers.
The Lady Pioneers tallied 30 points off turnovers and 15 second chance points as
Zakiyah Winfield lead GSC with 22 points and eight rebounds.
Along with Winfield was
Abby Stoller, also recording eight rebounds and Re'Shawna Stone with team high seven assists.
University of Charleston was leady by Erykah Russel with 43 points, 16 rebounds and four steals.
Coming Up
The Lady Pioneers will match up against Davis & Elkins College at home, Wednesday, January 13
th at 5:30pm. At this time a no spectator policy will be followed at each of the 12 Mountain East Conference institutions. The league's Board of Directors will evaluate the no spectator policy no earlier than January 19, 2021.
