Lady Pioneers Tally 19 Three-Pointers to Defeat D&E

Glenville, W.Va. – Glenville State finished 123-82 against Davis & Elkins (0-2) to improve to 2-1 on the year after a narrow start to the contest.
 
Mashayla Cecil set a Blue and White career high totaling 20 points in the game shooting 6-for-8 from beyond the arc and 70% from the floor.
 
How It Happened
 
First Quarter:
 
Abby Stoller hit the scoreboard first sinking a basket from deep, although the Senators would lead 8-7 going into the first media timeout.
 
Out of the break, Vendela Danielsson connected with Re'Shawna Stone to add to the Lady Pioneers leading MEC statistic for Field Goals Made.
 
Then tying the contest at 14 all then again at 25 all, Zakiyah Winfield sunk her first three ball of the season to end the quarter 28-27.
 
Second Quarter:
 
In the second, the Lady Pioneers and Senators would keep within two, seesawing back and forth in the quarter.
 
Victoria Brown and Mashayla Cecil continued to tally the Lady Pioneers Three-Balls made collecting their sixth of the contest leading 41-40.
 
Both teams would tie again at 50 a piece, the fourth tie of the night to end the half. Offensively, the Blue and White shot 37.5% from the floor and 8-for-27 from three-point land. The Senators were 22-for-35 and 33.3% from deep. Both teams would only tally a four-point lead as their largest separations.
 
Third Quarter:
 
From the half, the Lady Pioneers picked up their dribble opening on an 18-4 run to finding baskets easily, gaining their largest lead at the time, 68-54.
 
Mashayla Cecil and Kaylee Pierce both connected with Zakiyah Winfield then Makayla Pierce found Re'Shawna Stone to sink three triples.
 
Extending their lead again, Stone sunk another ball from beyond the arc and a short floater from Taychaun Hubbard to lead 88-58.
 
The Lady Pioneers ended the quarter leading 98-66 after a 50 all intermission.
 
Fourth Quarter:
 
In the fourth, both teams would trade baskets equally with buckets from Danielsson, Winfield, Brown and Stollers century mark three ball.
 
Dezha Congleton dialed up two from the stripe and Taylor Smith added a teardrop and tripe to end the contest 123-82.
 
Inside The Box Score
 
After a slow start, the Lady Pioneers picked up their offensive game to end the contest shooting 47.8% from the field and tallied 19 Three Pointers Made.
 
The Blue and White forced the Senators into 34 turnovers with 18 steals and four blocks.
 
Taychaun Hubbard and Zakiyah Winfield both added 19 points to the Lady Pioneers score as Winfield tallied another double-double to her career with 10 assists on the night.
 
Dazha Congleton continued with 12 points and game high six steals.
 
Davis & Elkins College was lead by Jamiyah Johnson scoring 20 points and 14 rebounds as the Senators shot just 2-for-4 from deep and 54.4% from the field. D&E however, outrebounded the Lady Pioneers 42-39.
 
Coming Up
 
The Lady Pioneers will travel to Buckhannon, W.Va. to tip off against West Virginia Wesleyan College at 2:00pm. At this time a no spectator policy will be followed at each of the 12 Mountain East Conference institutions. The league's Board of Directors will evaluate the no spectator policy no earlier than January 19, 2021.
