No. 24 GSC Stays Unbeaten Conquering Cardinals

Glenville, W.Va. –  For the first time in six decades, No. 24 GSC Hoops start the season 5-0 after defeating Wheeling University (0-4) 92-78. With this historic start, this also leaves them as the only undefeated team in the Mountain East after Concord defeated West Liberty earlier this evening.
 
John Williams scored team high 22 points earning his first double-double as a Pioneer with 13 rebounds.
 
How It Happened
 
First Half:
 
The Cardinals got ahead of the Pioneers first as they trailed 13-8 going into the first media timeout. Zane Desouza connected with Luke LeRose and Nick Edwards sunk a three ball to close their gap 14-12.
 
Hegel Augustin then tied the game at 14 a piece and Desouza again at 19 all until both teams would continue to trade leads.
 
From there, John Williams added a layup as Augustin continued to score from deep leading, 28-24 at the five-minute mark.
 
The Pioneers then gained a slight advantage by going on a short 7-2 run to lead 36-28, Williams then connected with Gus Eddy to send Wheeling to their locker room trailing 38-30.
 
The Pioneers shot 40.5% from the floor bringing down 23 rebounds and tallying six three balls in the half. Maintaining similar numbers, the Cardinals also shot 42.9% from the floor and just 18% from behind the arc.
 
Second Half:
 
The Cardinals opened the half with a three ball and jumper until the Pioneers gained a ten-point advtanage as Tommy Williams, Nick Edwards and Luke LeRose all sunk three balls to put the Pioneer ahead 57-44.
 
From there, a flurry of threes connected as the Blue and White would make separation as they went on an 18-5 run. Adrian Scarborough and Seth Fallon then added a pair of freebies as Nick Edwards then dunked over the Cardinal's defense.
 
Leading Wheeling 77-49, the Pioneers continue to add to their stat sheets, Scarborough and Desouza added freebies with J. Williams and Edward adding layups.
 
Down the stretch Tommy and John Williams both added a pair from the stripe to end the contest 92-78.
 
 
Inside The Box Score
 
Despite shooting just shooting just 39.2% from the floor and only connecting on 13-of-46 from behind the arc GSC nevertheless managed a 16-point victory. Wheeling took advantage tallying 28 offensive rebounds although the Pioneers forced the Cardinals into 15 turnovers gaining 20 points from there.
 
Nick Edwards tallied a double-double at half and finishing the contest with 18 points and 11 rebounds and four assists.
 
Hegel Augustin followed behind with 12 points and Tommy Williams with eight.
 
Wheeling efficiently shot 48.3% from the floor but yet just 5-for-22 from deep tallying 47 points in the paint and 15 on court points. The Cardinals was lead by Jarett Haines as he scored a game high 24 points and tallied six rebounds.

GSC Hoops (5-0) will travel to West Liberty University (4-1) Saturday January 23 and tip off against the Hilltoppers at 4:30pm
