Institute, W.Va. – Glenville State (1-0) wins in final seconds on opening night 117-114 against West Virginia State University (0-1).
Hegel Augustin tallied 40 points setting a new career high, to start his senior season, while also pulling down 13 rebounds finishing with a double-double.
How It Happened
First Half:
West Virginia State got on the board first with a quick 4-0 lead. The Pioneers shortly earned their first lead of the contest, 7-6 with buckets by
John Williams and
Hegel Augustin.
Seth Fallon and
Tommy Williams both added two shots from behind the arc leading 15-11.
Williams then found
Gus Eddy to add another shot from deep as Glenville continued to lead 19-17.
Zane Desouza and
Nick Edwards added six and two baskets, respectively to push the Pioneer's lead to 27-20.
Both teams traded buckets to tie the contest at 33-all. Glenville State then slowly attempted to breakaway starting with three shots by Augustin from behind the line and layup from
Adrian Scarborough.
Down the stretch, GSC upheld a short advantage 45-44 until Augustin added a bucket from deep connecting with Fallon, three shots from behind the line, a dunk and a layup from Edwards to push their lead 53-46.
To end the half, Desouza connected with Edwards as the Pioneers led 55-53.
Second Half:
The Pioneers slowly made separation as
John Williams sunk two baskets from deep, with
Adrian Scarborough following behind with doubles from behind the line. GSC gained a double digit lead when Augustin tallied another triple in the contest following an additional pair by Scarborough.
WVSU closed the gap on a 12-5 run to tie the contest at 90 a piece at the ten-minute mark.
Back-to-Back triples from Augustin would slightly detach from the Yellow Jackets as Edwards then hit the century mark with doubles at the line. Continuing the Pioneer momentum, Edwards and Williams added layups that pushed GSC head 108-99 at the five-minute marker.
West Virginia State itching their way back and with one-minute remaining the Pioneers lead by just one at 113-112.
Nick Edwards scored a layup to push their lead to 115, until the Yellow Jackets added a pair from the strip as GSC led by one with 14 seconds remaining. Edwards connected on another pair of free throws as GSC extended their lead to three.
WVSU then had three attempts from deep but fell short as GSC held on to claim victory on opening day 117-114.

Glenville State shot 50% from the floor and totaled 15 buckets from deep while tallying 46 points in the paint and 29 second chance points. The Yellow Jackets shot 35-for-47 with just 355 from behind the arc.

Glenville State will host home opener against the University of Charleston, Sunday January 9 at 4:00pm in the Waco Center. At this time a no spectator policy will be followed at each of the 12 Mountain East Conference institutions. The league's Board of Directors will evaluate the no spectator policy no earlier than January 19, 2021.
