Institute, W.Va. – In the first victory of the season, the Lady Pioneers saw seven players score double figures to reach the first century mark of the 2020-21 year, in a 126-82 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
GSC (1-0) tallied 14 made three-pointers as
Vendela Danielsson totaled five on the night scoring, 15 points in the contest
How It Happened
First Quarter:
Abby Stoller put the Lady Pioneers on the board first with a layup, after connecting with
Dazha Congleton from the floor. The West Virginia State (0-1) answered back quick gaining a 5-2 lead early in the first.
Another layup from Stoller and a shot from the line by Re'Shawna Stone, the Lady Pioneers would then tie the contest at seven a piece and again at 13 all.
Mashayla Cecil and
Kaylee Pierce then shot back-to-back three's that kick started GSC's offense as the Blue and White went on an 18-4 run to end the quarter, 27-17.
Second Quarter:
To start the second, Cecil found Stoller from behind the arc that capped a 7-0 start as GSC lead 34-17 at the 8:15 mark.
The Yellow Jackets, looking to close the gap trailed 40-27 before
Vendela Danielsson sunk a three ball to pause their momentum.
WVSU tallied a 10-0 run to pull within a ten-point difference. Danielsson added another shot from behind the arc and layup from
Zakiyah Winfield to push the Lady Pioneers back out 52-37.
Dezha Congleton and Re'shawna Stone then scored the last baskets of the half sending WVSU into the locker room trailing 59-42
Third Quarter:
The Yellow Jackets opened the second half on a short 7-2 jump.
Taychaun Hubbard and
Victoria Brown added two layups to answer back on an 11-3 run to maintain a twenty-point lead.
Vendela Danielsson deep from three as
Taychaun Hubbard continued with a layup while
Victoria Brown doubled down, two jumpers to lead 85-56.
Re'Shawna Stone then ended the third connecting with Hubbard on a layup to extend their lead 94-61.
Fourth Quarter:
Taychaun Hubbard's bucket from deep would help GSC hit their first century mark of the season, while also leading 101-63.
Buckets by Hubbard, Winfield, Cecil and Pierce then pushed the Lady Pioneers on a 15-2 run and lead 116-65!
Down the stretch,
Alexis Maynard added three shots from behind the line to end the contest 127-82.
Inside The Box Score
Glenville State dominated the stat sheet by outscoring West Virginia State in Bench Points (73-39), fast break points (14-4), points off turnovers (35-18), points in the paint (70-40) and rebounds (69-45).
Taychaun Hubbard scored a career high 22 points in the contest along with five rebounds and two blocks.
Along with Hubbard, six Lady Pioneers scored double digits; Zakiyha Winfield (21) Re'shawna Stone (18),
Vendela Danielsson (15),
Mashayla Cecil (13),
Victoria Brown (12) and
Kaylee Pierce (11).
Winfield added another double-double to her career with 13 rebounds.
Dazha Congleton and
Victoria Brown both tallied 3 steals on the night.
The Yellow Jackets were lead by Shelby Harmeyer with 12 points and 8 rebounds.

The Lady Pioneers will host their home opener, Sunday January 9 at 2:00pm in the Waco Center against the University of Charleston. At this time a no spectator policy will be followed at each of the 12 Mountain East Conference institutions. The league's Board of Directors will evaluate the no spectator policy no earlier than January 19, 2021.
