PHILIPPI – Glenville's football squad utilized a strong ground game Saturday, running to a 35-21 victory over Alderson-Broaddus in the annual "Battle for the Barrel." The Pioneers rushed for 307 yards in the workmanlike win.
Early on, it was a Battler lead, as ABU got on the board within the first two minutes. Glenville would fumble on their first possession, and shortly afterwards, Anthony Billups scored on a two-yard plunge. Austin Hampton's point after gave the Battlers a 7-0 lead at the 13:36 mark of the first quarter.
Responded with three touchdowns before halftime.
Alfred Menjor would score the first two, one from 10 yards at the 7:26 mark of the first quarter, and the second from 30-yards at 8:07 of quarter number two.
Zay Huff tallied the third score, a rush from four yards with only 1:40 remaining in the half.
Josh Jones' three point afters pushed the GSC halftime lead to 21-7.
Coach
Mike Kellar's Glenville squad ran the lead to 35-7, by scoring the first TD's of the second half. Menjor scored his third touchdown of the day from four yards out with 7:14 remaining in the third, and just moments later, linebacker
Seth Arnold rambled 58 yards with a fumble recovery at the 4:27 mark of the third.
Brandon Penn forced the fumble.
ABU answered with two fourth quarter scores; a Robert Johnson four-yard pass from Jaylen McNair, and a 47-yard scoring strike from McNair to Terrance Tate. They would get one more possession in the fourth, but Glenville's defense held.
For Menjor, it was his second consecutive 100-yard game as the back ran for 191 yards on 25 carries. Huff added 66 yards on 20 carries, while quarterback DeAndre Clayton ran for 54 yards on six carries. Clayton was 4-of-10 through the air for 36 yards, with Huff snagging two receptions for 12 yards.
Defensively, Arnold led the way again with seven tackles.
Mark Shepherd and
Jaylen Jones each recorded quarterback sacks, while the defense as a whole registered nine tackles for loss.
Glenville improves to 2-4 with the win, while Alderson-Broaddus falls to 0-7. The Battlers are 0-6 in the MEC.
Glenville retains the rivalry game's "I-79 Barrell" with the victory. This is the sixth time that the two programs have played each other in the trophy game. Ironically, the road team has won every time.

Mike Kellar's squad returns home next weekend, hosting Notre Dame for Homecoming Festivities. Kickoff will be 1:30 at Morris Stadium.
