WEST LIBERTY –
Josh Jones kicked four field goals for Glenville on Saturday afternoon, and
Brandon Penn corralled three interceptions. Plus, the GSC defense held West Liberty to only 29 yards rushing…but the Pioneers ended up on the short end, with a heartbreaking 20-19 defeat.
After falling behind 20-3 at one point, the Pioneers rallied and kept chipping away at the Hilltopper advantage. They had three possessions in the late stages of the fourth quarter down only a point, and with seven minutes left were on the West Liberty 44. Despite the furious comeback, they could not get Jones into position for a game-winning opportunity.
Glenville went on top early 3-0 on a Jones 24-yard field goal. The score was set up by a reverse pass from
Javon Butler to
Kyree Wallace for a 42-yard gain inside of the West Liberty five. The Hilltoppers bounced back to score three first half touchdowns. Tyler Moler plunged in from the three for the first score at 8:39 of the first quarter, and moments later Jack Allison found Wisdom Jenkins from 15 yards at 6:01. They extended the lead early in the second quarter with Moler scoring again, this time from six yards out.
Glenville's comeback began just before halftime
Alfred Menjor scoring from two yards on a strong second effort run. This cut the margin to 20-10 as the teams went to the locker room.
Coach
Mike Kellar's squad kept their momentum in the second half. Jones would kick three field goals in the frame, cutting the West Liberty lead to one. His successful boots were from 23 yards at the 13:06 mark of the quarter, 22 yards at 7:15, and lengthy 43-yarder at 2:29. Glenville's defense would produce three takeaways on Penn's interceptions in the second half, and as each defense continued to make key plays to keep each side at bay in the fourth quarter.
Glenville led in several team statistical categories; in first downs 16-14, and in total yards 234-205.
Alfred Menjor again led the GSC rushing attack with 75 yards on 22 carries. Quarterback DeAndre Clayton was 18-of-32 through the air for 87 yards, with Butler leading all receivers with six catches for 47 yards.
Kyree Wallace collected five receptions for 63 yards.
Moler led West Liberty's rushing attack with 53 yards on 25 carries. Quarterback Jack Allison was 15-of-24 for 176 yards.
Defensively, Penn's acrobatic thefts were complemented by
Seth Arnold, who led the unit with 11 tackles. The group was strong, producing 12 tackles for loss, including sacks by
Mark Shepherd and
Jimmie Simmons.
West Liberty improves to 3-2 overall, and 3-1 in the Mountain East Conference. Glenville falls to 1-3 with the loss, all of which have been league games.
Glenville returns to action next Saturday, hosting the University of Charleston at Morris Stadium.
