GLENVILLE – Coach
Mike Kellar's Glenville State football team battled another tough team strong this week, but again came out on the short end of the scoreboard. This week, GSC's hard effort ended with a 20-9 loss to a talented University of Charleston squad.
Glenville moved the ball well in the first half, and had the ball inside of the UC 30 on four different occasions. Unfortunately, the drives would only yield six points, as Charleston went into the half up 7-6. Tyreik McCallister scored the first UC touchdown at 12:12 in the second quarter. Glenville's points came on a pair of field goals from
Josh Jones, as he connected on successful kicks from 36 and 23 yards. GSC's other forays into the red zone ended with a missed kick, and an interception in the end zone.
Charleston extended the lead to 14-6 early in the third quarter, as Colby Cooper corralled a 21-yard pass from Guy Myers. Jones added his third field goal of the day in the final minute of the third quarter; a 26-yard connection that cut the deficit to 14-9. Barry Elliott of UC produced the game's final score, catching a Myers pass and sprinting home from 73 yards.
Glenville's running game was effective throughout the day, recording 233 yards on the ground on 52 carries.
Alfred Menjor again led the GSC attack, running for 135 yards on 21 carries, followed by
Zay Huff with 56 yards on 19 tries. Quarterback DeAndre Clayton ran for 42 yards on 12 carries. Through the air, Clayton 17-of-38 for 92 yards, with
Kyree Wallace leading the receiving corps with four catches for 46 yards.
In terms of special teams, Jones has now kicked a total of seven field goals in the last two weeks. Punter
Avery Book was solid as well, averaging 44.8 yards on five punts.
Myers was 16-of-24 for 234 yards passing for UC, with McCallister rushing for 83 yards on 16 carries.
Glenville was again close in total yards, as UC held 376-325 edge.
Charleston improves to 4-1 overall, while GSC is now 1-4. Glenville returns to action next Saturday, traveling to Alderson Broaddus for the traditional "Battle of the Barrell." Game time is 1:00 in Philippi.
