WHEELING – Coach J.R. Dodson and his Glenville Soccer team recorded their first "signature" win Saturday night…defeating the Wheeling Cardinals on the road, 2-1 at the Cardinal's Homecoming celebration.
Glenville opened the game with a bang…scoring two goals in the first seven minutes of the match. Freshman Merel Smets scored an unassisted goal only 3:57 into the contest and just minutes later, Senior Heidi Hunter found the net on a nifty assist from Miki Abe at 7:44. Just moments into the game under the lights at WU, the Lady Pioneers had staked an astounding 2-0 lead.
Glenville's defense held strong with the advantage, and carried the 2-0 lead into halftime. Wheeling chipped away with chances in the second half. And finally produced a goal at the 76:16 mark, with Braedynn Porter registering her sixth goal of the season. Behind a raucous homecoming crowd, Wheeling materialized some late pushes in the Glenville end, but the GSC defense held on to preserve a 2-1 victory!
Wheeling led in shots 10-7 and in corner kicks 2-1, but in terms of scoring goals, the Pioneers made the plays they had to for the win. Goalkeeper Jasmine Runk accumulated seven saves for the win.
Glenville improve to 2-13 overall, and 1-12 in the Mountain East Conference. Wheeling falls to 3-10-1 overall, and 2-9-1 in the MEC.
Coach Dodson's squad returns to action on Wednesday night, hosting West Liberty at Morris Stadium.
