Smet’s Golden Goal Lifts Glenville Past West Liberty For Second Straight Win

Glenville, W.Va.- Glenville State Women's Soccer hosted the Hilltoppers of West Liberty on Wednesday evening. The Pioneers were looking to even up the season series after falling to West Liberty 1-0 back in September.

Miki Abe would get the first shot on goal of the game in the 15th minute but it was saved by the West Liberty goalie. Glenville would have two more shots on goal in the opening half but could not convert. The Pioneers would hold a slight edge in shots 4-3 after 45 minutes of play. The Pioneers after a physical first half of play would go into the half tied with the Hilltoppers in a scoreless match.

The second half was much of the same, as Miki Abe kept applying pressure on the Hilltopper defense firing a shot low left that was once again saved by the West Liberty goalie.

Goalie for the Pioneers Jasmine Runk played a vital role in the match especially in the late stages of regular time. Runk saved a shot in the 83rd and 89th minute to force the game into overtime. Glenville would hold an 11-7 advantage in shots heading into the first overtime period.

In the first overtime, Glenville would have a slight advantage in shots and have a chance to put the game away in the 94th minute. Jordan Dansby-Ross would attempt a free kick for the Pioneers but could not slide it past the West Liberty goalie. The game would remain scoreless and go into a second overtime.

The Pioneers full game pressure would pay off early in the second overtime as Merel Smets would fire a shot low left to win the game. This was Smets fourth shot on goal in the game and it gave the Lady Pioneers their second victory in a row.

The Hilltoppers would fall to 6-5-4 on the season and the Pioneers would improve to 3-12. The Pioneers will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to Notre Dame (OH).
