Institute, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Soccer traveled to WV State on Wednesday evening to take on the regionally ranked Yellow Jackets. After a 5-2-1 start to the season the Yellow Jackets were regionally ranked for the first time in program history.
The Yellow Jackets would apply pressure in the early stages of the match registering six shots and two corner kicks to their advantage in the opening fifteen minutes. Shortly after, the Pioneers would surrender their first goal of the game in the seventeenth minute to Fran-Soares Cupertino to put the Yellow Jackets ahead 1-0.
After a lengthy run of holding off WV State, Fran Soares-Cupertino would strike again with just two minutes left in the half.
Going into the half, the Yellow Jackets would be issued their first yellow card, and the physical style of play between the two teams would bleed over into the second half. Both Glenville and WV State would have players receiving yellow cards as well. The game would have a total of 23 fouls.
Merel Smets would try to get the Pioneers on the board in the 81st minute firing a shot low right, but was saved the WV State goalie. The Yellow Jackets would go on to win 2-0.
Two goalies would receive a half of playing time for Glenville.
Jasmine Runk would record two saves, while
Morgan Smailes who started the game would register four.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Saturday when they host Frostburg State at 7 PM.
