ATHENS – Glenville closed their volleyball season Friday night, and they did so in a very exciting Friday night match, bowing to the Concord Mountain Lions on the road; 10-25, 26-24, 25-18, 20-25, 10-15. It was a back-and-forth marathon, that lasted two hours and 11 minutes, seeing the two teams trade punches for a total of 198 points.
Concord opened the evening with a strong start, rolling to a 25-10 first set win. In the tightly contested second set, GSC led for much of the frame. However, Concord made a late surge and pushed to a set point at 24-22. At this juncture, Coach
Keven John's squad rallied to score the next four points and steal the set, squaring the match at 1-1.
Glenville carried their momentum into the third set, vaulting to an early 11-3 advantage. Concord answered, and cut the deficit to three at 15-12, but GSC responded with a run of their own, and won the set 25-18, gaining a 2-1 lead. Concord would hold some close leads in the fourth set, opening at 4-1, and leading 13-9 midway. GSC regained the lead briefly at 16-15, but the Mountain Lions answered with a 10-4 run, squaring the match at 2-2.
In the decisive fifth set, it was close throughout, but Concord managed to close the match 15-10.
Karlei Shaver led GSC with 17 kills, followed by
Skylar Mace and
Sydney Goodrich with 13 each. Goodrich produced five service aces, leading another strong night Glenville service that saw them register 12 as a team. Shaver added three.
Julia King recorded 31 assists, with
Jenna Cogar adding 12. Defensively, the liberos led the way in digs;
Lindsay Winkler tallied 14 and
Hannah McKown 11. Goodrich complemented them with 10. Mace registered four blocks, and King two.
Glenville closes their season 3-19 overall, and 1-15 in the Mountain East Conference. Concord ends at 9-17 overall, 4-12 in the MEC.
