CHARLESTON – Glenville's Men's Basketball squad was not able to overcome a strong second half from the California University of Pennsyvania Vulcans Saturday afternoon, losing 93-89. GSC materialized a strong comeback in the final minutes, but came up just short.
In a similar fashion to their Friday night game against St. Augustine, Glenville came out not hitting from the perimeter early, but found the range and recorded a strong close to the first half. Going in at halftime, the Pioneers held a 50-46 advantage. After going up 53-46 on their first possession of the second half, Glenville faced a counter-punch from the Vulcans.
Cal' produced 10-2 surge to gain a 56-55 advantage. They carried that momentum to produce some larger leads; holding nine-point leads at 75-66 and 85-76 later in the half. Still, GSC refused to fold, and made a strong exciting surge in the final minutes, almost recording the comeback.4
All-American John Williams had another strong game, ripping the nets for 32 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Teammate
Adrian Scarborough was huge for the Pioneers, recording a double-double of his own; hitting 10-of-13 shots from the field, scoring 21 points and registering a team-high 11 rebounds.
Nick Edwards also hit for double figures, adding 11 points.
Glenville's second half was hampered by struggles from the free throw line. For the game, GSC was 10-of-24 from the stripe (41.6%). GSC outrebounded the Vulcans 40-36, and posted a strong field goal percentage of 51.5% (34-of-66). Besides the free throw woes, the turnover margin was a factor for GSC, as the Pioneers had 15 turnovers compared to seven by Cal.
Now 1-1, with two games under their belts, Coach
Justin Caldwell's Pioneer squad will swing into league play on November 23, hosting the University of Charleston.
