Lady Pioneers Head South to Face Johnson C. Smith

GLENVILLE – Coach Kim Stephens and her Glenville State College Lady Pioneer squad is back on the road this Wednesday, playing in their third consecutive road non-conference game. GSC opened the season 2-0, taking road victories over Bloomsburg and West Chester at WCU's season-opening tournament.

On Wednesday, they will be facing another formidable opponent in the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith. The school, located in downtown Charlotte, has produced eight winning seasons in a row, dating all the way back to the 2013-14 campaign, and they have once again started strong, opening at 2-0 as well with a pair of wins at the Albany State Tournament.

Glenville and Johnson C. Smith last met in January of 2020 in the Waco Center, and after a year of Covid-related scheduling, the two teams are now squaring back off in Charlotte. It will be a contrast in styles, as GSC has long had one of the top scoring teams in the nation for D-II, and Johnson C. Smith has long had one of the top defensive squads. In the last full regular season of basketball in 2020, The Lady Pioneers averaged a national leading 106.8 points per game. That same year, Johnson C. Smith held opponents to 60 points or less in 18 of their 28 games, yielding only 57.9 ppg.

Through the team's first two games, Re'Shawna Stone has been the team's scorer with 40 points (20.0), followed by Zakiyah Winfield with 32 points (16.0). Abby Stoller has been the unit's top rebounder with 20 (10.0). Winfield has posted a team-high eight assists.

Please note that the game time has been moved to 3:00 PM in the afternoon on Wednesday. The contest is being played in JCSU's Brayboy Gymnasium on their campus.
