Glenville, W.Va. – Glenville State drop a pair of season openers at home against Hillsdale College 7-0 and University of Findlay 7-5 while picking up nine hits on the day.
How It Happened
Game One:
The Chargers gained a quick 4-0 lead in the top half of the contest leaving the Blue and White runner-less until the bottom of the third.
Katelyn Richardson picked up the first walk for the Pioneers and replaced by
Skylar Mace. Mace stole second but was left stranded to end the third.
In the top of the fifth, the Chargers tallied another run across the plate before HDC's short stop errored Peyton Wrentz blooper giving the Pioneers a chance to answer back. There, Richardson would pick up a walk but both Pioneers would hold their stance at first and second.
In the bottom of the sixth ending HDC's no hitter and bunting for a hit, Catharine Pelfrey then stole second as
Mackenzie Martinelli singled up the middle though leaving both runners stranded.
Though GSC would fall 7-0 off two hits with Peyton Wrentz on the mound.
Game Two:
Opening the second inning was
Mackenzie Martinelli reaching second on an error then advancing to third on a wild pitch.
Kaelyn Stenger then singled to left scoring Martinelli to put the Pioneers on the board first, 1-0.
In the third,
Ashley Fridley picked up a walk to start the top half then pushed ahead with a single up the middle from
Kaylee Drake.
Catherine Pelfrey then doubled down the line scoring Fridley and advancing Drake to third. Kara Smith then scored Drake on a single to center to lead 3-0!
Though quickly answering back the Oilers scored two in a bases loaded situation to cut their deficit 3-2.
In the fourth, the Oilers then continued to rally back in another bases loaded situation to lead 6-3 before
Celina Maberto would come into relief.
Pelfrey in the fifth picked up a double on the leftfield line then advanced to third on a passed ball but was left stranded ending the top half.
Then in the seventh,
Kayla Letart would come into pitch hit finding herself on first after taking four balls.
Ashley Fridley then singled to center as
Kaylee Drake singled to the pitcher to load the bases for the Blue and White.
Scoring on a passed ball and ground ball to short, the Pioneers crossed Fridley and Letart ending the ball game falling 7-5.
Inside the Box Score
On the day, the Blue and White picked up nine hits and five walks as while both Peyton Wrentz and
Kaylee Drake tallied two losses. Maberto totaled four strikeouts with Wrentz counting six strikeouts on the mound.
Catherine Pelfrey matched three hits on the day with
Karra Smith adding two RBIs.
Kaylee Drake also picked up two hits and a walk though giving up six hits in her 2.1 innings pitched.
Kayla Letart and
Ashley Fridley also knotted walks as
Mackenzie Martinelli also scored a run for the Blue and White.
