Pioneers Drop Home Contest to Fairmont State

Glenville, W.Va. – A late surge by the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons (11-4) was enough to had the Glenville State Pioneers (7-3) just their third loss of the season on Friday afternoon from inside the Waco Center, 100-89.

It had been 18 days since the Pioneers took to the court back on February 8 when they defeated Frostburg State.

Glenville State saw three players score in double figures with John Williams posting a game-high 31 points and nine rebounds.

How It Happened

First Half:

After a slow and sluggish start by both teams the Fighting Falcons would build a small six-point lead at 10-4 at the 15:48 minute mark.

Glenville State would answer back and pull within one at making it 10-9 after an Adrian Scarborough bucket and a Seth Fallon three-pointer.

Fairmont State would continue to push the lead as they held a 29-26 lead over GSC with 7:36 to play until the break. Then the Pioneers' John Williams took over. He went off scoring 23 first half points hitting five three-pointers while going 9-of-15 from the floor in just one half.

However, the Pioneers and Fighting Falcons would go into halftime tied up at 44 all after a GSC foul and FSU's Przemyslaw Golek connected on two-free throws to end the first half.

Both teams shot well from the field. GSC finished the first half shooting 51% from the floor and 45% from deep while Fairmont State shot 59% from the floor and 50% from behind the arc.

Second Half:

The contest would continue to be tight and both teams traded several buckets to start the second half. But the Pioneers would hold a four-point lead 57-53 as Tommy Williams netted a three ball with 16:24 to play.

FSU came right back and took a 61-60 lead on an Isaiah Sanders three-pointer at the 14:37 minute mark.

The Pioneers would answer and go on a 15-5 run as they held an eight-point lead 75-66 with a little under 9:00 minutes to play.

But Fairmont State would not go away as they went on a huge run, outscoring the Pioneers 20-2 as they now held a nine-point advantage 86-77 with under three minutes left.

Glenville State would try to make a run but could not make up the ground as the Fighting Falcons held on to defeat the Pioneers 100-89.

GSC forced FSU into 15 turnovers and converted them into 20 points. Fairmont State had the advantage in the paint outscoring GSC 43-30 while also winning the rebounding battle 45-26.

Inside The Box Score

Glenville State finished the contest shooting 44% percent from the floor while Fairmont State shot 54%. The Pioneers also shot 41 % from deep with the Fighting Falcons shot 45% from deep.

Hegel Augustin chipped in with 23 points as he went 7-for-16 from the field and netted four three-pointers. Nick Edwards dished out seven assists to go with 16 points.

Tommy Williams drilled two three-pointers for GSC as he scored six points.

Fairmont State had five players in double figures with Isaiah Sanders leading the way with 28 points. Dale Bonner posted 19 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists.

Cole VonHandorf scored 16 points while Seth Younkin finished with a double-double scoring 16 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.

Coming Up

The Pioneers will hit the road to finish off the regular season tomorrow Saturday, Feb. 27 as they take on the Concord University Mountain Lions at 4:30pm.
