Yards Not Enough For GSC Football Spring Season Opener

Glenville, W.Va. – UNC Pembroke's Josh Jones threw for 350 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Braves to a 30-7 win over Glenville State on Saturday afternoon in the spring opener for the Pioneers.

How It Happened

First Quarter:

Early in the first UNCP got off to a quick start forcing a three-and-out on defense, and then needing just three plays to go 75 yards for the 7-0 lead. Jones hit Eric Price 35 yards for the score.

The Pioneers offense got back on track and got the ball down to the Braves 8-yard line, but their field goal attempt was blocked.

Second Quarter:

Lynch got an interception early in the second quarter for Glenville State, but the Pioneers were unable to take advantage of the turnover. The Braves pushed another six across the line while adding the extra point kick minutes before halftime as Jones hit Sean Brown from eight yards out in the corner of the end zone to make it 14-0 at the half.

Third Quarter:

The Braves made it 20-0 by taking the first possession of the third quarter 74 yards on five plays and gave Jones his third TD pass of the day, again to Prince. UNCP was at it again just six minutes later, this time on a Jones to Hicks connection from 11 yards out.

Fourth Quarter:

The Pioneers finally got on the board on their next possession as Heltzel found Huff for an 18-yard touchdown pass. Glenville State got a stop, but could not convert on offense and get momentum.

UNCP then went on a long, 13-play, 68-yard drive that resulted in a field goal to make it 30-7 with just five minutes left in the game.

The Pioneers turned the ball over on their next possession, but the Braves missed points on a failed field goal attempt. Glenville State was unable to get points on its final possession for the final 30-7 margin.
