Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer Football team will look to bounce back this Saturday, March 20 when they travel to the University of Charleston for 12 p.m. kickoff with the Golden Eagles.
Pioneer and Golden Eagles
Glenville State (0-1) fell in their season and home opener to UNC Pembroke last Saturday, 30-7.
The Pioneers tallied 11 first downs against the Braves. GSC ran a total of 53 plays for a total of 167 yards. UNC Pembroke ran 62 plays for 474 yards.
GSC rushed for just 27 yards and had 140 yards passing.
The Pioneers also were just 4-for-14 on first downs and had two turnovers. A bright spot for GSC was they were only flagged five times for 41 yards.
Charleston (0-0) had their opening game with Concord postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. The Golden Eagles were picked to win the MEC South Division.
Since the start of the MEC (2041) UC holds a 4-2 record against the Pioneers. Last season, UC defeated GSC 42-3. The Pioneers last win over the Golden Eagles came back in 2016 in a 35-28 victory.
Pioneer Highlights
Quarterback
Tim Heltzel threw for 134 yards and a touchdown as he went 12-for-24 in the loss. Freshman QB,
Corbin Pierson also saw some time as he went for 1-for-4 for six yards and an interception.
Seth Arnold led the ground attack for GSC as he carried the ball five times for 15 yards while
Kavion Martin totted the ball four times for 13 yards.
Zay Huff was a bright spot at wide receiver for GSC. He caught four passes for 69 yards and a touchdown. Tight end
Aaron Hopkins hauled in three passes for 36 yards.
Defensively, true-freshman
David Livingston led the team in tackles with seven to go along with a sack.
Jacob Hartman totaled six tackles. Dane Lynch finished with four tackles and an interception.
Again, kickoff between GSC and UC is slated for 12 p.m. from UC Stadium at Laidley Field.
