Institute, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneer (3-10, 0-2) softball team dropped their two opening conference games on Saturday to the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State University (5-5, 2-0).
Mackenzie Martinelli led the Pioneers as she went 4-for-5 with an RBI and scored a run in the two contests.
How It Happened
Game One:
The Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the first inning as they took an early 4-0 lead.
WVSU then added three mores run in the second inning as they led GSC, 7-0.
Mackenzie Martinelli got the Pioneers on the board in the third as she singled to left field scoring
Ashley Fridley as they trailed 7-1.
West Virginia State added three more runs as they took game one, 10-1.
Kaylee Drake pitched all 4.0 innings allowing 10 runs on 12 hits.
GSC tallied 11 hits while WVSU had 12 hits in the game.
Game Two:
WVSU struck first in game number two as they scored two early runs in the first leading 2-0.
They added three more in the third as they took a 5-0 lead.
However, GSC would then get on the scoreboard in the fourth as
Kaylee Drake doubled to left field scoring Martinelli. Then later in the inning
Peyton Werntz singled to left as
Kaylee Drake scored making it 5-2.
GSC then pulled within one when
Catherine Pelfrey doubled to right scoring
Peyton Werntz and
Ashton Palmer as they made it, 5-4.
However, the comeback would fall short as WVSU added six more runs as they went on and claimed the 11-4 win.
Celina Maberto pitched all six innings allowing 11 runs on 12 hits.
Catherine Pelfrey went 3-for-4 with two RBI's.
Inside the Box Score
GSC tallied 18 hits in the two games while WVSU had 24 hits.
Mackenzie Martinelli went overall 4-for-5 in the two games with an RBI and scored a run.

Glenville State (3-10, 0-2) will return to action on Sunday, March 21 when they travel to the Uinversity of Charleston.
