Second Half Carries Yellow Jackets Past Pioneers

Glenville, W.Va. – West Virginia State (2-1) outscored the Glenville State Pioneers (0-3) 16-6 in the second half, handing GSC their third loss of the spring season 37-27.

How It Happened

First Quarter:

West Virginia State scored two early touchdowns on a 64 yard run and then a fumble recovery in the end zone on a GSC punt to lead 14-0 in early in the first.

However, the Pioneers wouldn't let that slide as Tim Heltzel then played the long ball game throwing a 75-yard bomb to Drew Hatfield. GSC would trail 14-7 going into the second.

Second Quarter:

Then six seconds into the quarter, WVSU extended their lead 21-7 on a short five-yard drive. GSC drove 12 plays and went 80 yards, as Seth Arnold tallied a short four-yard touchdown pulling within seven of the Yellow Jackets.

Then in the final five minutes of the half, JD Guerrero would tie the game at 21 all off a 33-yard touchdown pass.

Third Quarter:

In the third, Glenville State would let the Yellow Jackets get away scoring two touchdown passes and a field goal as they tallied 16 over-all points. Yellow Jackets led 37-21 going into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter:

Down the stretch, Zay Huff would score the final touchdown for GSC with a 37 yard catch from Heltzel. The Pioneers would attempt a two-point conversion however the rush failed prevailing the Yellow Jackets to a 37-27 victory.

Inside The Box Score

Glenville State racked up 460 total yards of offense in 61 plays whereas West Virginia State tallied 370 total yards on 59 plays.

GSC had the advantage in the air compiling 352 passing yards. The Pioneers finished with three more first downs the Yellow Jackets 19-16.

Zay Huff was his favorite target hauling in 126 yards and a TD. While true freshman Drew Hatfield tallied 118 receiving yards on four catches and a touchdown.

On the ground, Alfred Menjor led the attack carrying the ball 18 times running for 79 yards with Seth Arnold raking up 31 rushing yards on six attempts and a touchdown.

Brandon Penn, defensively had eight tackles on the day with Jordan Hartman finished with six.

West Virginia State was led by quarterback Donova Riddick throwing for 178 yards completing the day 15-for-21 with a touchdown pass and TD run. Riddick tallied 88 yards on the ground.

Dant'e Jones carried the ball 19 times for 84 yards and two touchdowns with Dustin Crouser led the WVSU defense with 11 tackles.

Coming Up

The Pioneers will travel to Athens to face off against Concord University in Week 4 of MEC football action. Kick-off is slated for 1:00pm on April 3.
