Lady Pioneers Advances to MEC Semifinal, Awaits the Winner of NDC/WVWC

Wheeling, W.Va. – The Lady Pioneers depth proved to be too much against the West Liberty Hilltoppers as GSC advances to MEC Semifinals for the fourth straight year. Glenville State will take on the winner of West Virginia Wesleyan and Notre Dame matchup on March 6 at 2:00pm.
 
Re'Shawna Stone led the pack in scoring with 23 total points shooting 10-for-14 from the field and 2-for-2 from deep.
 
How It Happened
 
First Quarter:
 
The Lady Pioneers picked up the early 10-5 lead over the Hilltoppers as Re'Shawna Stone sunk a three ball forcing a WLU 2-minute scoring drought.
 
Going into the first media break, Glenville State held an 11-15 advantage as Stone quickly wracked up eight points. Zakiyah Winfield after the break pitched a layup with Deja Atkinston adding another three ball.
 
Jada Mitchell tallied up a second chance pull up jumper off a West Lib turnover, that would lead to a triple and driving layup by Abby Stoller, ending the first 27-17.
 
Second Quarter:
 
Taychaun Hubbard opened the second with four points as Dazha Congleton and Zakiyah Winfield each added freebies from the strip holding a 36-23-point lead.
 
Mashayla Cecil then ended GSC scoring drought as she netted a three pointer from the right wing with Abby Stoller following behind driving to the basket adding a teardrop.
 
West Liberty would outscore Glenville State 3-2 as the cut the Lady Pioneers lead to single digits at 49-40 going into the half.
 
After two complete, the Blue and White shot 44% from the field while West Liberty shot 50% from the floor, as both teams shot 33.3% from deep.
 
Third Quarter:
 
Mitchell, Stone and Winfield opened the second half for GSC driving three tear drops extending
their lead back to doubles before the Hilltoppers would pull within four.
 
Atkinson then retaliated with another three ball as WLU answered right back with another as GSC led 58-54.
 
Then at the 4:45 mark the Hilltoppers would take the lead by one until Cecil responded with a three ball, where both teams then be held at 61 all. GSC entered a short 6-0 run to slowly separate from the Hilltoppers.
 
Shooting four-for-four of their last field goals, Glenville State held a short 77-68 lead over West Liberty.  
 
Fourth Quarter:
 
Stoller then picked up the double digit lead driving a layup with Hubbard adding a second chance shot and bucket from deep separating by 14 from the Hilltoppers.  
 
Shooting five of the last seven, Mitchell and Atkinson both netted three ball buckets entering a 13-2 run as Vendela Daneilsson then hit the century mark from deep in Sweden.
 
The Lady Pioneers completely exploded in the fourth scoring 41 points total points as GSC ended the contest 118-87. The 41 fourth quarter points is a new MEC Tournament record as the Lady Pioneers surpassed their previous record of 35. 
 
Inside The Box Score
 
Glenville State finished the contest shooting 48.5% from the floor and tallied 13-for-29 from behind the arc while rebounding 52 shots of the basket and scoring 46 second chance points while forcing 20 turnovers.
 
GSC tallied six Lady Pioneers in double figures including Zakiyah Winfield, Abby Stoller, Taychaun Hubbard, Jada Mitchell and Deje Atkinson.
 
Zakiyah Winfield picked up another double-double scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds and four assists.
 
Abby Stoller's footwork was too much for the Hilltoppers to handle setting a new career high 18 points while grabbing eight rebounds.
 
Taychaun Hubbard netted 13 points with Deja Atkinson and Jada Mitchell each chipping in with 12.
 
West Liberty shot 53% from the floor and 7-for-19 from deep as they were led by Olivia Belknap with game high 36 points.

Glenville State will face the winner of NDC/WVWC  in the semifinals on March 6 at 2:00pm.
