How It Happened
Game One
Set One:
The evening would begin with the Pioneers scoring off an error made by the Mountain Lions, followed by a kill from Sarah Grainger, putting the Blue and White immediately on top at (2-0). However, the Mountain Lions would answer back quickly with a 3-0 run to take the lead, (2-3). But this didn't stop the Pioneers, two back-to-back kills from
Skylar Mace, followed by a service ace from
Sarah Mazzaferro, would put the Pioneers back on top, (5-3). Through the set, both teams, battled a hard fight, but the Mountain Lions would pull away from the Pioneers in a few runs, taking set one, (25-16).
Set Two:
The Pioneers would come into the next set of the evening strong, with a kill by
Karlei Shaver, followed by a kill from
Sarah Mazzaferro, and then by
Jyra Clark-Casto. Then Concord would answer back, with a kill by Imani Rodgers. However, this did not put a stop to the Pioneers push to win set two. Kills through the set by
Taylor Goett, and
Skylar Mace too, would contribute to the Pioneer victory in the second set of the first game, (25-20).
Set Three:
In set three, the Pioneers would struggle through the set. After an early 6-0 run from the Mountain Lions would show they were coming back strong. The Blue and White would try to battle Concord but was not enough to pull away from the Mountain Lions, as they fell (25-19) in the third set.
Set Four:
Coming into set four, the Pioneers would score first with a kill by
Karlei Shaver. Then, Concord would answer back off an error by the Blue and White, and a kill from the Mountain Lions' Sheridan Herron. Then a kill from
Sarah Mazzaferro, would be the answer back from the Pioneers in the beginning of the set. Both teams would fight to keep the lead through the set, and the Pioneers would be strong, and pull out with a victory of set four, (25-22).
Set Five:
In the final set of the first game, both teams played strong, knowing that the title of the evening's first game was on the line. Excellent performances of both sides made the final set of the game very heated, with multiple ties through the set. Unfortunately, the Pioneers were unable to take set five, falling to the Mountain Lions by two, (15-13).
Game Two
Set One:
In the final first set of the evening the Concord Mountain Lions would answer first with a kill. However, the Blue and White would turn around and score as well off a kill by
Sydney Goodrich. Both teams played tight through the set, with kills from
Skylar Mace,
Karlei Shaver,
Sarah Mazzaferro, and
Jyra Clark-Casto contributing to the Pioneer point count. Unfortunately, it was not enough for the Blue and White to pull out a victory in set one, as they fell (25-23) in a very competitive set.
Set Two:
In the next set, Concord would again strike first with two kills, but a kill by
Karlei Shaver would then put the Pioneers on the board. However, Concord would turn around and go on an 8-0 run, before the Pioneers could answer back again. The Pioneers tried to make a comeback, but were unable to, as they fell also in set two, (25-17).
Set Three:
In the next to the last set for the night,
Sydney Goodrich would first give the Pioneers their first point. The Pioneers would ride their high energy wave as kills by
Karlei Shaver,
Skylar Mace,
Taylor Goett,
Jyra Clark-Casto, would all contribute to the Pioneer victory of set three, (25-23).
Set Four:
In the final set of the night, Concord would score twice to begin, by errors from the Blue and White. The Pioneers would then try to turn around and answer back with a kill by
Karlei Shaver, and then by
Sydney Goodrich. Concord would put up a fight against the Pioneers unfortunately, taking the final set, (25-16).
Inside the Box Score
On the night for the Pioneers in both games combined picked up a total of 114 kills, and 123 digs.
Karlei Shaver led the night in kills with a total of 36, followed by
Skylar Mace with 25.
Sarah Mazzaferro also contributed with 18.
Karlei Shaver also led the night combined in points with a total of 39, followed by
Skylar Mace with 32.
Sophie Shifferly led the night in assists with a total of 47, followed by
Jenna Cogar with 31. In digs for the night,
Kylie Williams led the Pioneers with a total of 34, followed by
Karlei Shaver with a total of 25.
Skylar Mace led in blocks for the Pioneers in both games combined with 6, followed by
