Pioneer Softball Picks Up Double Header Victories

Glenville, W.Va. – Pioneer Softball earns first two victories of the season as Glenville State defeated Salem University in walk off fashion then run ruling the Tigers in game two.

Game Two | Glenville 8, Salem 0

Karra Smith led the pack on the offensive attack with five hits including a double scoring three RBIs and three runs.
Peyton Wrentz and Celina Maberto both picked up two wins on the mound as Wrentz gave up just two hits and one walk in six innings with Maberto allowing just one hit in two full innings.

How It Happened

Ashley Fridley opened up the Pioneers scoring summary singling to Salem's shortstop and scoring off of Karra Smith's double.

Salem answered back scoring two runs to gain a 2-1 lead at the end the first half of the second. Kaylee Drake started the second with a big shot bombshell over the left field wall. Ashton Palmer then singled to third base as Catherine Pelfrey came up to the plate meaning business. Hitting a dong also over leftfield, GSC led 4-2 after two complete.

The Tigers tied the ball game at four all off two hits including a homerun in the third then taking the lead in the sixth with a 6-4 hold.

Then the Pioneers turned it on in the seventh. Pelfrey and Fridley fixed to first off Salem errors as Smith RBI'd Pelfrey trailing 6-5. Mackenzie Martinelli picked up a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Fridley tying the ball game a six all. Then on a wild pitch, Smith would stand on second as she advanced to third on Jasmine Runk's single to center. Then to win the ball game, Drake singled to short as the Blue and White would take game one in walk off fashion.

Game Two:

Using momentum from game one, Catherine Pelfrey tallied a double to open the bottom half of the first as Ashley Fridley advanced her to second with a single. Mimicking game one, Smith then scored Pelfrey on a single as Kaelyn Stenger dropped a bomb clearing Smith off the bases holding a 4-0 lead.

In the third, Mackenize Martinelli singled and scored off of Kaylee Drake's double, Stenger then continued to add to her hot streak singling and scoring on a double by Ashton Palmer ending with a 6-0 lead over Salem.

Smith then picked up a double with Martinelli following with another to score Smith in the fourth.

Then in the sixth and final inning with two outs, Fridley singled to center as Smith then doubled holding man on second and third as Martinelli pushed Fridley across the plate ending the ball game 8-0.

Inside The Box Score

Glenville State tallied 23 hits on the day including with Mackenize Martinelli picking up four hits including two doubles with four RBIs.

Catherine Pelfrey chipped in with three hits including a double and first career homerun! On the day Pelfrey collected two RBIs and three runs with Kaylee Drake also doubled and homered as she scored two runs in the double match up.

Kaelynn Stenger added three hits counting a homerun and double while scoring two RBIS and two runs with Ashton Palmer following with two hits including a double.

On the mound, Kaylee Drake allowed just three earned runs in five innings.

Coming Up

The Pioneers will host their second softball tournament next weekend March 12-14 facing off against Cedarvlle, Carlow, Tiffin and Wayne State.
