Wheeling, W.Va. – In the MEC Tournament Championship, Glenville State fell 87-80 to the University of Charleston in the final minutes of Play. GSC held their lead throughout most of the contest as UC's drive in the final three would put the Golden Eagles on top.
Zakiyah Winfield, Re'Shawna Stone and
Abby Stoller were all named Mountain East All-Tournament Team as Winfield also earned the Heart and Hustle Award.
How It Happened
First Quarter:
It was a loud opening 30 seconds for the Lady Pioneers as
Abby Stoller would sink the first bucket for Glenville State with a long shot three ball.
Kaylee Pierce then made a layup in the paint with Re'Shawna Stone following behind with a rimless three-pointer to hold an 8-4 lead.
Going into the first media break, Taychuan Hubbard found Stone in the paint scoring a second chance bucket leading to beautiful shot from behind the arc by
Mashayla Cecil holding a 17-10 advantage over the Golden Eagles.
Freebies from
Jada Mitchell and
Dazha Congleton along with a three ball from Cecil would give the Lady Pioneers their first double-digit lead.
GSC would finish the first quarter with a 30-21-point hold as both teams shot 45% from the floor and 40% from deep.
Second Quarter:
Charleston in the second pulled within six against Glenville State until the Lady Pioneers answered back. Re'Shawna Stone first made a jumper then sunk a three-pointer to extend their advantage back to nine going into the media timeout.
The Golden Eagles entered an 8-0 run as
Vendela Danielsson ended their streak with a pair at the stipe leading 41-37.
The Lady Pioneers ended the half by making three of their last three field goals to lead 48-43. The Lady Pioneers held a better shooting percentage from deep with 35% as the Golden Eagles held 25%, however both teams shot 45% and 47% from the field also bringing down 23 rebounds each.
Third Quarter:
Quickly in the third, UC came out sinking a long ball three and layup to tie the contest at 48 all then again at 51 all with a layup from Stone.
Zakyiah Winfield then sunk a tear drop in the paint off a fast break turnover to stray away 55-51 though UC would retie the ball game again at 59-59.
Then
Abby Stoller drove a layup in the paint followed by a jumper from Re'Shawna Stone ended the third 65-59 in favor of Blue.
Fourth Quarter:
A big three and layup from
Zakiyah Winfield would push the Blue and White 70-63 in the opening two minutes.
UC answered back by going on a 7-0 run to trail just by two with 6:37 left in the tournament. Both teams traded baskets back and forth as GSC held their two-point lead going into the final two.
UC's Erykah Russel tied the game at 78 all at the 1:59 then took the lead at 80-78 on a long jumper extending heir lead by four as the Golden Eagles added a pair from the stripe.
Within the last 40 seconds, UC's Russel picked up another pair as
Dazha Congleton scored a layup pulling GSC back within five but the Golden Eagles would come out on top 87-80.
Inside The Box Score
Glenville State shot 46% from the floor while netting just 8-for-30 from behind the arc forcing 22 turnovers and converting 21 into points where as GSC held the lead for 34 minutes.
Abby Stoller netted her first double-double of the season with ten points and 11 rebounds while grabbing two assists and a steal.
Zakiyah Winfield led the Blue and White with 18 points on the day while picking up four assists. Re'Shawna Stone followed closely behind with 17 points, six rebounds also with four assists.
Taychaun Hubbard and
Dazha Congleton both chipped in with ten points as
Kaylee Pierce also took two steals.

The Lady Pioneers will now await the NCAA Selection Show tonight at 10:00pm where Glenville State will loom their competitor at the NCAA Regional Tournament hosted by Ohio Dominican.
