Pioneer Softball Breaks Even With WU

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneer (6-23, 3-15 MEC) softball team split a doubleheader on Sunday with the Cardinals of Wheeling University.

How It Happened

Game One:

After three complete scoreless innings, Ashley Fridley grabbed the reins for the Lady Pioneers with a shot to center earning a single, then advancing to second by a fielder's choice. Fridley went on to
score for GSC off of WU's error on Mackenzie Martinelli's at bat as they led 1-0.
 
Kaylee Drake followed behind Mackenzie Martinelli sending the ball to left field landing herself on second and sending Martinelli home as GSC held a 2-0 lead.
 
Wheeling answered promptly by tallying two runs in the bottom of the fifth and another four runs in the sixth creating a four run gap that GSC was not able to close with the final tally's as they fell to the Cardinals, 6-2.
 
Game Two:

The Lady Pioneer's attacked the ball first in the second inning. Karra Smith lead GSC off with a double to center field with Jessica Williams behind mimicking with another double to left field.
Smith scored off of Williams hit as Williams found her place on second.
 
Haylee Stevens followed behind with a hit to left field earning a single and advancing Jessica Williams to third. Ashley Fridley got on base with a single while Jessica Williams scored on the error
on the play putting GSC ahead of the ballgame 2-0.
 
After a scoreless third, Wheeling marked a run in the top of the fourth.
 
GSC flamed WU's deficit in the fifth. Ashton Palmer got the inning going by executing Wheeling's  error and reaching first base. Following Palmer, Mackenzie Martinelli came through with a single to
center field pushing Palmer to second.
 
Karra Smith followed up with a single to center field as well scoring Ashton Palmer and advancing Mackenzie Martinelli to third. Martinelli scored while Smith advanced to second on a ground out play.
Peyton Werntz delivered at the plate with a laser to center field scoring Karra Smith.
 
The Lady Pioneers of Glenville State College held Wheeling University to just five hits in game two and held solid defense throughout winning the second game, 5-1.
 
Inside the Box Score

Karra Smith hit .500 at the plate today going 3-for-6 with one RBI and two runs scored.

Ashley Fridley went 3-for-7 with one RBI and swiped one stolen base.

Haylee Stevens earned a double and went 2-for-5 at the plate.

Peyton Werntz added a hit and RBI. Werntz also got the win for game two allowing just five hits and holding Wheeling University to just one run.
 
Kaylee Drake had a double and one RBI for the day. Drake took the loss for game two but gave up just two walks.
 
Coming Up

The Lady Pioneer's will be back in action on Saturday, April 17 on the road facing off MEC opponent Fairmont State University in a doubleheader at 1pm.
