Pioneer’s Lose Fight with Falcon’s

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer (6-24, 3-16 MEC) softball team was swept in a double header Sunday with the Fighting Falcons of Fairmont State University.

How It Happened

Game One:

The Lady Pioneer's started hot at the plate as Ashley Fridley led with as Ashton Palmer came through with a single to left center.

Karra Smith delivered with a shot over the left field fence tallying three runs for GSC as Fridley and Palmer were sent home quickly by Smith.

Fairmont State answered with two runs marking one in the third and one in the fourth.

Glenville State added to their 3-2 lead as Smith singled to the right side with Katelyn Richardson behind her rocking homering in the fourth.

FSU continued to inch past GSC's lead scoring three more runs in both the fourth and fifth inning creating a deficit that the Pioneer's could not repair with the final 8-5 Fairmont State.

Game Two:

GSC started hot at the plate again in game two. Ashley Fridley led the Lady Pioneer's off with a walk with Ashton Palmer behind her who reached by fielder's choice while Fridley was out on the play from third to second.

Karra Smith sent the ball to the outfield allowing Ashton Palmer to advance on the out while Mackenzie Martinelli came to the plate and singled to right field sending Palmer home marking one run for GSC.

Fairmont State answered with a run in the foot of the inning tying the ball game 1-1.

The Pioneer's kept the ball rolling as Kaylee Drake led off with a single to centerfield with Jessica Williams following with a sacrifice bunt to advance Drake. Katelyn Richardson then held first due to a FSU throwing error with Peyton Wertnz behind her reaching due to a UC error as well. Drake and Richardson both executed and scored off of FSU errors.

FSU tallied another run in the second, two in the third, and three in the fourth as GSC trailed further behind as the scoreboard read 7-3 FSU.

As GSC's last attempt for victory was unsuccessful, they were still able to string together another run. In the top of the sixth, Martinelli got a rally going with two outs as she singled to center field. Catherine Pelfrey added to the rally with another single to the left side. Drake delivered for the Lady Pioneer's as she ripped the ball up the middle scoring Martinelli.

Fairmont added one more run in the sixth as the score stood final 8-4 FSU.

Inside the Box Score

Catherine Pelfrey hit .500 at the plate today as she went 3-for-6.

Karra Smith had a day at the plate going 2-for-6 with one being a homerun. Smith also scored two runs and three RBI's.

Kaylee Drake went 2-for-6 and scored one run and one RBI. Drake also took the loss in game one as she just gave up one walk.
Ashley Fridley took the loss in game two but she just allowed three hits.

Coming Up

The Lady Pioneer's will be back at it again on the road tomorrow, April 18th (Sunday) at 12PM as they will travel to Maryland to compete against MEC opponent Frostburg State (15-6, 13-3 MEC.)
