GSC Falls Short of MEC Tournament, Splits Final Regular Season Doubleheader with Concord

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer baseball team finished the regular season on the road and a split with the Concord University Mountain Lions.

With the split the Pioneers fall short of making the MEC Baseball Tournament as they need three-of-four wins against Concord as the Mountain Lions had the tie breaker.

How It Happened

Game One:

Glenville State (18-19, 14-18 MEC) got started as Colby Werry scored on a fielder's choice which was hit by Duane Englund as they led 1-0 in the first.

Concord (15-21, 14-18 MEC) tied the game up in the fifth at 1-1 on an unearned run.

The Mountain Lions then took their first lead of the game in the sixth at 2-1.

However, GSC would answered back in the seventh as Duane Englund homered to left field to tied it up at 2-2. Then Devante Rose singled to third base and brought the scoring run, Tre'von Smith, across the plate as the Pioneers took game one, 3-2.

Colby Werry went 1-for-4 and scored a run while Tyler Phillips went 2-for-3. Devante Rose also went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Duane Englund went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI's and a home run.

Nicholas Shumek pitched five innings allowing one run on four hits with four strike outs.

Ronald Sterns picked up his first win on the mound as he went two innings allowing one run on three hits with a strike out.

Game Two:

The Mountain Lions got off to a great start as they scored two runs in the second, third, and fourth innings as they held a 6-0 lead.

Glenville State got on the scoreboard fifth when Fabian Escalante homered to right scoring Zach Morris as they pulled within four runs, 6-2.

But Concord responded as they another two runs in the fifth as they led 8-2.

However, the Pioneers would explode in the sixth inning scoring seven runs as they took a 9-8 lead. The scoring got started as Duane Englund singled through the left side scoring Tre'von Smith then
Fabian Escalante did more damage as he singled through the right side as Duane Englund and Tyler Phillips both crossed the plate.

Mathew Mangum then scored on a Ryan Rodriguez ground out. Shane Talvacchico then doubled scoring Escalante. Colby Werry had an RBI single scoring Luke Petrice and then Tre'von Smith doubled to left center as Werry crossed the plate.

With just a one run lead over CU, GSC would head to the bottom of the seventh looking for three outs.

But it would not be as Concord's Anthony Stehlin would hit a walk off through the left side scoring Jon Osteen and Josh Adkins as they defeated the Pioneers 10-9 and earned a berth in the MEC Tournament.

Tre'von Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Fabian Escalante went 2-for-3 with four RBI's and scored two runs. Colby Werry, Duane Englund, Ryan Rodriguez, and Shane Talvacchio all had an RBI.

Chase Swain pitched two innings allowing four runs on three hits with two strike outs. Zach Morris also pitched two innings allowing three runs on three hits with a strike out.

Inside the Box Score

The Pioneers tallied 16 hits while the Mountain Lions had 17 hits.

Colby Werry went 2-for-8 with two runs scored and an RBI while Duane Englund went 2-for-6 with three RBI's and two runs scored.

Tyler Phillips went 3-for-6 and scored a run in the two contests while Tre'von Smith went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
