Volleyball Bests Rio Grande in Five Sets

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville's volleyball team battled the University of Rio Grande through five grueling sets Saturday afternoon, winning 25-22, 14-25, 25-22, 16-25, 15-10. The nail-biting 199-point affair lasted over two hours, and produced several exciting rallies on both sides.

 

Rio Grande led 19-11 late in the first set, but the Pioneers rebounded with a 14-3 surge to steal the frame. Rio dominated the latter stages of the second set for convincing result, but Glenville fought them off to take the third set by three points. Rio answered by jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead in the fourth set, and carried that momentum to tie match at two sets apiece. Glenville closed the afternoon with an 8-3 run in the deciding fifth set to seal the win.

 

Sydney Goodrich and Skylar Mace led Glenville with 17 and 12 kills respectively. Goodrich was also on with her service game, recording seven aces. Sarah Grainger posted a game-high 32 assists followed by Jenna Cogar with nine. Madison Shepherd registered a team-high 20 digs, and was complemented by Goodrich who closed her solid stat line with 15 digs of her own.

 

Glenville is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Salem for a non-conference match. Play starts at 7:00 PM at Salem's T. Edwards Davis Gymnasium.
