GLENVILLE – Glenville State's Lady Pioneers continued their torrid first half of the season on Wednesday night, rolling to a convincing 106-34 victory over visiting Davis & Elkins. GSC settled the issue early, powering to a 49-17 halftime lead, and cruising through the second half. This was a sterling defensive effort from the nation's #3 ranked team.
As has been the "M.O" for Coach Stephens' GSC squad, the Lady Pioneers utilized relentless pressure defense to force Senator turnovers. The end result was transition points, and a total of 19 D&E turnovers in the first half. They ended the game with 37 total turnovers, while GSC delivered 44 points in the paint.
Re'Shawna Stone led a balanced GSC attack that saw 12 different players find the scoring column, five which were in double figures. Stone's 19 was complemented by 17 from Zakiyah Winfield, 16 from Mashayla Cecil, 12 from Taychaun Hubbard, and a career-high 11 from Zephaniah Gray. Hubbard led the way with 12 rebounds, Winfield with five assists, and Abby Stoller with four steals.
Cecil hit a team-high four three-pointers, while Stone, Gray, and Vendela Danielsson all hit three.
GSC connected on 17 three-pointers for the game, going 17-47 (36.2%). They were 43-of-91 overall (47.3%), while holding D&E to a 14-of-48 night from the field (29.2%).
Glenville improves to a perfect 13-0 with the win, and 8-0 in the MEC. Davis & Elkins falls to 3-10 overall and 0-7 in conference play.
Marissa Berlin led D&E. the league's leading rebounder posted a strong double-double, tallying 20 points and 16 rebounds.
GSC returns to action this Saturday, making the short trip to Buckhannon to face West Virginia Wesleyan. Tip-off is set for 2:00 in the Rockefeller Center.
