Lady Pioneers Move to 9-0 in MEC Play

BUCKHANNON— For the second consecutive game Glenville's Lady Pioneers held their opponent to under 40 points. On Saturday, it was in the form of a 98-38 rout of West Virginia Wesleyan as the nation's third ranked team improved to a perfect 14-0. They are 9-0 in the MEC.  

GSC gained separation early. A Mashayla Cecil three-pointer put them up 9-4 and moments later, a Re'Shawna Stone three extended the advantage to 15-6.  

After leading 19-10 at the quarter break, GSC broke the game open in the second frame, out scoring the Bobcats 34-6 to take a 53-16 lead into halftime. They gradually pulled further away in the second half, ballooning the margin to 60 by game's end. 

Zakiyah Winfield led the GSC attack with team highs of 26 points, eight steals, and nine rebounds. Cecil delivered 18 points on six made threes, with Stone adding 17 points and a team-high five assists. Taychaun Hubbard scored 16 points and two blocked shots. Andjela Pavicevic also recorded two blocked shots. 

Besides Stone's five assists, Winfield, Hubbard, and Skylar Davidson all contributed. four. GSC registered 24 assists as a team against only 10 turnovers. 

Team wise, GSC shot 38-of-76 from field (50.0%), and forced 37 Bobcat turnovers. The Lady Pioneers were 14-of-41 from beyond the arc (34.1%). 

Wesleyan was led by Malaika Kimmons with 11 and Cierra Tolbert with 10. The Bobcats fall to 2-8 overall and 1-7 in the league.

Glenville returns to action next Wednesday, hosting West Virginia State in the Waco Center. 

Tip-off is set for 5:30.
