BUCKHANNON – Glenville's Men suffered a close, heartbreaking loss
on Saturday afternoon, falling to West Virginia Wesleyan in overtime, 97-96. It was a back and forth contest throughout the afternoon, with each team refusing to yield control.
Wesleyan's Jayden Hibbett scored the game-winner with 2.1 seconds remaining in overtime.
Early on, Glenville rallied from some adversity to claim the lead. Wesleyan started fast, holding early leads of 7-0, 11-4, and 17-9. Glenville answered with a 15-5 run, culminating with an
Adrian Scarborough put-back for a 24-22 lead. Behind the scoring of
Luke LeRose and John Williams Jr., the Pioneers kept that momentum and carried a 50-47 lead into intermission.
Scoring remained close in the second half with the two teams tied at 59-59 seven minutes in. At that point, GSC guard
Gus Eddy nailed back-to-back three-pointers to stake the Pioneers a six-point 65-59 lead. Unfortunately for the Pioneer faithful, Wesleyan heated up, and regained the lead. With only four minutes remaining, the Bobcats held an 85-79 advantage.
GSC refused to fold, and battled back. Williams Jr. would connect on a long three in the final minute of regulation, forging an 87-87 tie and forcing overtime.
In the overtime, LeRose drained a three with
1:47remaining, breaking a 93-93 deadlock, putting the Pioneers up 96-93. From that point, the Bobcats would score the final two field goals of the day, closing with Hibbett's final make.
Williams Jr. and Scarborough would both tally double-doubles; Williams Jr. with 24 points and 13 rebounds, while Scarborough posted 20 points and 15 rebounds. LeRose would end the day with five made threes for 15 points, with Eddy hitting four bombs and closing the day with 14 points.
Matthew Allman came off the bench to hit double figures with 10.
Williams Jr. recorded a team-high five assists, followed by
Tommy Williams with four. GSC held a decisive advantage in team rebounding 49-33, and shot 42.5% from the field (34-of-80). They were 16-of-46 from beyond the arc (34.8%).
Hibbett led Wesleyan with 26 points, and was complemented by Braeden McGrew with 18.
Glenville falls to 6-7 overall with the loss, and 3-6 in the MEC. Wesleyan improves to 2-14 overall, and 1-9 in the league.
