GLENVILLE – Glenville State battled a tough West Virginia State squad tight for much of Wednesday night's contest, but eventually fell to the Yellow Jackets 88-79. It was State's seventh consecutive victory.
Glenville started strong, staking an early 6-1 lead. Seven minutes in, they still lead 16-15, but State surged ahead with a 13-5 run to post a 28-21 advantage. By half, the lead had extended to 12 at 47-35.
GSC opened the second half with a torrid surge, cutting the margin to 53-50 at the 15:08 mark. A John Williams Jr. basket at the 12:52 mark cut the lead to one at 60-59. A Williams three-pointer at the 8:50 mark tied the game at 68-68. Unfortunately for the Pioneer faithful, the Yellow Jackets responded with a 6-0 run to regain control of the score. Glenville continued to battled down the stretch cutting the lead to 80-79 with 2:47 remaining, but could not complete the comeback.
Williams Jr. led the Pioneer attack with 23 points, a tally that included five three-pointers. Zane DeSouza complemented Williams with a strong 21-point performance, while Adrian Scarborough continued to be a double-double machine, scoring 16 points and pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds. DeSouza and Williams also led in assists with five each.
GSC led in total rebounds 35-30, and hit on 30-of-66 shots from the field (45.5%). They connected on 12-of-32 three-pointers (37.5%).
State was led by Anthony Pittman with 24 points, followed Ernest Jenkins with 18 points, Glen Abram 17 and Noah Jordan 16.
GSC falls to 6-8 on the season, and 3-7 in MEC. State improves to 12-5 overall, and 7-3 in the league.
Glenville is on the road Saturday, traveling to Athens to face Concord. Tip-off is set for 4:00.
