Kim Stephens Secures 100th MEC Win

Glenville State 15-0 Overall, 10-0 in MEC Play

GLENVILLE – Glenville held serve on Wednesday night, moving their record to 15-0 with a 97-77 victory over a game West Virginia State squad. Coach Kim Stephens' squad is ranked third in the nation, but had to overcome a strong Yellow Jacket effort to produce the victory.

This was conference win #100 for Coach Stephens, who is now 100-10 in MEC play. She is 138-20 overall.

State led early at 15-8 by the first media timeout with 4:47 remaining in the quarter.. Glenville rallied to take the lead at 19-18 on a Vendela Danielsson three, and pushed that advantage to 27-20 at the quarter break on a buzzer-beating three from Re'Shawna Stone.

Each team battled back and forth through a fast and physical quarter, with GSC carrying a 53-41 lead into halftime. State came out hot again in the second half, cutting the lead to six at 60-54 at the 6:45 mark. At this point, GSC asserted their pressure defense and began to knock down shots, producing a 12-0 run to produce a 72-54 lead in the final minute of the quarter.

GSC maintained their separation in the fourth quarter, pulling away and pushing the lead to 20 down the stretch. Zakiyah Winfield led the team in scoring with 22 points, followed by Stone with 17, Vendela Danielsson 12, and Abby Stoller 10. The balanced attack included several players just missing double figures; Mashayla Cecil and Tyeshia Taylor with nine each, and Kaylee Pierce with eight.

Dazha Congleton posted team highs with eight rebounds and six assists, while Taychaun Hubbard added seven rebounds. Stone led GSC's ballhawking defense with five steals, with Taylor and Stoller each recording three.

Glenville held a narrow edge in team rebounding 43-41, and shot 37-of-76 from the field (48.7%). Each team connected on 11 three-pointers.

State was led by Shelby Harmeyer with 17 points. She was omplemeted by Destiny Fields and Hannah Shriver with 15 each.

GSC's 15-0 mark includes a perfect 10-0 record in the MEC. State falls to 9-4 overall, and 5-3 in league play.

Glenville is back on the road Saturday, traveling to Athens to face Concord. Tip-off is set for 2:00.
