Box Score ATHENS – Glenville's Men produced another late-game comeback on Saturday at Concord, but like their Wednesday night surge against State, the Pioneer charge came up just short. In the end, the Mountain Lions prevailed 86-82 in the Mountain East Conference tilt.
In the early going, there were seven first half lead changes, before Concord pulled out to a 43-29 lead with only two minutes left before intermission. GSC rallied to score the next seven points, cutting into the deficit at 43-36, and carrying some momentum into the locker room.
As the second half wore into the middle stages, GSC chipped away. At the 13:53 mark, Concord was up 56-47, but GSC materialized a 9-0 run, tying the game at 56-56 on an Adrian Scarborough free throw. Two minutes later, Tommy Williams nailed a three to again tie the score again at 62-62. A John Williams Jr. free throw on the next possession put the Pioneers back in front 63-62.
Concord bounced back with an 11-1 run, producing a seemingly comfortable advantage as the game entered the final five minutes. GSC refused to fold, and mounted a final charge. They cut the lead to four at 74-70, and in the final minute, a Zane DeSouza three cut the deficit to 82-80 with only 48 second left. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, the Mountain Lions hit their free throws in the waning seconds to secure the win.
John Williams Jr. led Glenville with 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Scarborough recorded another double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Tommy Williams tallied 17 points, and Luke LeRose 13. LeRose, Scarborough and Gus Eddy all delivered team-highs with four assists each.
GSC shot for 46.8% from the floor with a 29-of-62 performance, and connected on 11 three-pointers in 32 attempts. The Pioneers held a decided 37-21 advantage in team rebounds.
Glenville falls to 6-9 with the loss, and 3-8 in the Mountain East Conference. Concord improves to 7-10 overall, and 5-7 in the league.
Coach Justin Caldwell's Pioneers return home Wednesday night to host Alderson-Broaddus. The two teams waged an epic two-overtime battle last month in Philippi.
Tip-off is set for 7:30 on the Waco Center's McPherson Court.
