GLENVILLE – Glenville State's Lady Pioneers fought off a game effort from West Liberty on Saturday, pulling away from the Hilltoppers late for an 84-63 victory. Ranked 5th in the nation, GSC gained separation by recording 28 points in the fourth quarter, running their record to 12-0 overall, and 7-0 in the Mountain East Conference.
Early on, West Liberty kept the game close. It was 25-22 after one quarter, and remained 41-33 GSC at halftime. In the opening minutes of the second half, the Hilltoppers capitalized on a pair of GSC turnovers, cutting the margin to two at 43-41. GSC would respond by scoring the next 10 points, and would maintain control from there.
Glenville put four different players in double figures; Zakyiah Winfield 24, Re'Shawna Stone 18, Taychaun Hubbard 16, and Kaylee Pierce 13. Winfield and Hubbard also led in rebounding posting double-doubles each with 12 and 10 boards respectively. The pair also posted team highs of four assists each.
GSC posted another strong team rebound margin, winning that battle 51-35 over West Liberty. The Lady Pioneers did take a slight dip in shooting percentage on this day, hitting 33-of-77 from the field (42.9%). Connecting on only seven three-pointers, GSC found production getting to the basket, outscoring the Hilltoppers in the paint 52-24.
West Liberty was led by Corinne Thomas with 17 points, and Grace Faulk 14. The Hilltoppers fall to 9-5 overall, and 4-4 in the MEC.
Glenville remains home for their next game, hosting Davis & Elkins on Wednesday night at the Waco Center.
