GSU Volleyball Defeats the Bobcats for the First Time in School History

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State's Volleyball program coached by Keven John defeated Frostburg State University 3-2. The match lasted over two hours and marked the first win over the Bobcats in school history. 

Both teams battled throughout the frame in the first set until Frostburg gained the lead late. There would be a total of eight ties throughout the stanza. After trailing 14-12 the Bobcats created separation late. Frostburg State produced a 9-2 run gaining the lead 21-16. However, the Lady Pioneers responded by taking four out of the next five points cutting the Bobcats' lead to two. Glenville continued to battle but fell in the set 25-22.

The Lady Pioneers responded and took the second set 25-20. Glenville opened the frame with an 8-3 lead starting back-to-back kills by Rita Kelly. The Bobcats surged back and took a two-point lead at the 12-10 mark. Glenville finally created separation halfway through the set taking advantage of three straight errors. After taking a 21-16 lead, the Lady pioneers closed out the frame tying the match at 1-1.

In the third set, neither team could not create separation until after being tied at 8-8. Halfway through the frame, Frostburg took a five point lead 16-11 taking advantage of errors made by the Pioneers. The Lady Pioneers would tie the stanza at 16-16 with kills by Niderla Katarzyna and Lindsay Winkler. Once again the Bobcats took the lead late winning the set 25-21.

Glenville opened the fourth set on a 7-2 run. A combination of errors and kills by Helín Halden and Zoe Schmidt propelled the Pioneers. The Bobcats would not lead the frame at any point but tied the set halfway through at 15-15. Once gaining the lead at the 20-16 mark the Lady Pioneers closed out the stanza forcing the decisive first set.

After dropping the first point of the fifth frame the Pioneers led the entire time. Halfway through Glenville would have the lead 8-5 but the Bobcats tied the set at 8-8. The Lady Pioneers persevered and regained the advantage. Frostburg continued to keep the frame within one until the end. The Pioneers regrouped after a bad set taking the next point to win the stanza 15-13 and the match. 

Katarzyna Nideral finished the match with 19 kills followed by Rita Kelly and Nalaina Funk with 11. As a team, Glenville produced 12 service aces. Sarah Grainger led the match with 48 assists for the Pioneers. Defensively Lindsay Winkler finished the match with 28 digs followed by Sarah Grainger with 15.
