The Pioneers Defeat Alderson Broaddus 31-12 in the I-79 Barrel Classic

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State and the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus played in the I-79 Barrel Classic Saturday afternoon at Morris Stadium. The Pioneers 207 rushing yards propelled them over the Battlers 31-12 keeping the I-79 Barrel Classic trophy in Glenville. Glenville's record improves to (4-3) overall and (3-3) in the Mountain East Conference.

To open the contest the Pioneers held the Battles offense in check forcing a punt. With a muffed punt by the Alderson Broaddus punter, Glenville would start their first offensive possession at AB's 35-yard line. The Pioneers were held to a field goal but took the lead 3-0 early in the first quarter. Glenville's defense would force the Battlers to punt three more times in the opening quarter.

In the opening minutes of the second quarter, the Pioneers found the endzone from a two-yard run by Saeed Galloway. Freshman Anthony Garrett connected with Zay Huff and Orion Bonner to set up the Galloway touchdown. Glenville State pinned the Battlers on their one-yard line with an excellent punt by Avery Book. On the next play, Jaylen Tregle's pass would be intercepted by Dane Lynch once again giving the Pioneers great field position. Galloway was called upon again to punch it into the endzone for Glenville. Saeed would score his second touchdown of the game to extend the Pioneers' lead to 17-0.

Glenville started the second half with the ball but fumbled on the opening kick. The Battlers started the drive at the GSU 30-yard line. However, the Pioneers' defense would force Alderson Broaddus to punt once more. Starting the drive at their own one-yard line, the Pioneers were able to get into field goal range. The Battler's special teams blocked the 39-yard field goal attempt.  Late in the third quarter, Glenville's defense held strong stopping Alderson Broaddus on fourth down. The tackle made by Isaiah Macklin and Mack Lakes set up the offense to start in Battler territory.

In the early minutes of the fourth quarter, Alfred Menjor would break away for a 21-yard touchdown run extending Glenville's lead. The Battlers on their next possession clawed into the Pioneer's 24-point lead. Quarterback Jaylen Tregle found Tayshawn Yates in the end zone, but the drive consumed over five minutes. The Pioneers would be tested on fourth down once again. Marion Lawson created the much-needed sack for Glenville. Menjor would find the endzone for the Pioneers making it 31-6.
