Pioneer Football Falls to Notre Dame College 38-16

Glenville, W.Va. – Glenville State's Football team fell to the Falcons of Notre Dame College on the road 38-16. Notre Dame's offense finished the contest with 80 more yards of total offense than the Pioneers. Glenville's two interceptions proved to be costly leading to two touchdowns for the Falcons. The Pioneers are now (4-4) overall and (3-4) in the Mountain East Conference.

To open up Saturday afternoon's contest Glenville's defense would be tested early. After forcing Notre Dame to punt on the opening drive, a fumble by the Pioneers put Glenville's defense in a less desirable situation. Starting their next offensive drive at the GSU 27, the Falcons took advantage of the fumble. A 14-yard pass by Chriss Brimm would set up running back Idris Lawrence for the touchdown. During the next two possessions, both offenses hit a rut going three and out. On Glenville's third offensive drive of the day, A long 6:37 drive tied the game 7-7. Quarterback Anthony Garrett found Alfred Menjor for the 24-yard touchdown pass.

Continuing their dive from the end of the first quarter Notre Dame College was close to finding the endzone. The Pioneer's defense tightened up in the red zone forcing fourth down at the GSU 3. The Falcons would go for it on fourth down but Isaiah Macklin forced and recovered the fumble at the one-yard line. A slew of penalties by the Pioneers hindered their next offensive possession. Halfway through the second quarter, a 14-point swing gave Notre Dame College the lead 21-7.  Back-to-back interceptions by Anthony Garret would be returned for touchdowns. After the two interceptions, Garret lead the Pioneers down the field scoring a touchdown making it a one-possession game. Before the end of the half, the Falcons attempted a 37-yard field goal attempt. Kicker Cameron Shirkey's attempt would be successful making it 24-14

Glenville's offense opened the second half of play with a three-and-out. Notre Dame College once again took advantage of the Pioneer's mistakes starting their opening drive of the half at the GSU 30. A one-yard touchdown pass by Chris Brimm extended the Falcons' lead to 31-14. Notre Dame  College's special teams would come up big blocking Avery Book's punt. With great field position, the Falcons found the endzone once more. This time Idris Lawrence scored off a four-yard rush up the middle. In the waning minutes of the third quarter, Glenville's defense forced a safety making it 38-16.

In the final quarter of action, both offenses would be stagnant. While Notre Dame did not extend their lead late, eating over nine minutes of clock in the fourth quarter was just as effective. Not until the end of the quarter would the Pioneers get into Notre Dame College's half of the field. At the NDC 39, the Pioneers were stopped after going for it on fourth down. With 2:18 left on the clock, the Falcons ran the ball until the game was over.

Anthony Garret finished the day with 164 passing yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Alfred Menjor led the Pioneers in rushing yards with 42 averaging 3.5 yards per carry. Glenville's top receiver was Javain Bellamy with 71 receiving yards and a touchdown on six receptions. Brandon Penn lead the Pioneers in tackles with ten followed by Bob Jonjo with six. Jonjo would also end the contest with a sack. Sean Bowers and Terry Noel accounted for a pass breakup.
