GSU Women’s Soccer Falls on Senior Day 7-4 to Wheeling University

Glenville, W.Va, - The Lady Pioneers fell at home this afternoon 7-4 on Senior Day against the Cardinals of Wheeling University. With a goal in the 26th minute of the match, Merel Smets became the all-time leading goal scorer. Glenville's record falls to (0-14) overall and (0-12) in the Mountain East Conference.

The Lady Pioneers would start the match attacking which lead to many chances early.  In the first ten minutes of the match, Glenville produced five shots. While the Pioneers had the early shot advantage, the Cardinals scored two goals less than thirty seconds apart. In the 27th minute, Merel Smets would find the back of the net cutting into Wheeling's lead. The Lady Pioneers continued to create chances throughout the first half. Seniors Mackenzie Hendricks and Kaitlyn Bruce produced shots but the Cardinals keeper would make the save. 

Entering the second half trailing 2-1, Glenville continued to play with an attacking mindset. The physicality of the match picked up in the second half as well. There would be a total of 19 fouls called. In the 55th minute of the match, Merel Smets scored another goal tying the match at 2-2. Later in the 57th minute, a goal by Tori Cutright gave the Lady Pioneers the lead 3-2. The Cardinals would tie the match with a strike by Talynn DeBartolo. After tying the match at 3-3 Wheeling took another two-goal lead. Goals by Mary DiFonzo and Braedyn Porter helped the Cardinals regain the lead. Smets once again found the back of the net cutting Wheeling's lead to one. However, two late goals by the Cardinals would close out the match. 

Merel Smets finished the match with a hat trick. Senior Mackenzie Hendricks led the team in shots with five. Ivy White manufactured two assists for the Lady Pioneers followed by Lyric Allen with an assist. Senior Defenders Kaitlyn Bruce and Oluwatobi Jonna Oladapo played the entire 90 minutes for the Pioneers.
