GSU Football Defeats the Yellow Jackets For the First Time Since 2016

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State's Football team coached by Mike Kellar defeated the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State 31-30. This is the Pioneers' first win over West Virginia State since the 2016 season. While Glenville's defense allowed 412 yards of total offense, they held WV State's Donovan Riddick to 188 passing yards and one touchdown.

The Pioneers won the coin toss and differed to receive the ball in the second half. Three straight punts opened up Saturday's contest. On Glenville's second offensive drive they would find the endzone taking the lead 7-0. The Pioneers' passing attack got the drive going and Saeed Galloway punched it into the endzone on a one-yard carry.

Cole Hughart's tackle for loss on West Virginia State's next drive helped the Pioneers gain great field position. Glenville scored again at the 5:11 mark gaining a two-touchdown advantage. It would be all Anthony Garrett on this drive. Garret connected with Orion Bonner for a 35-yard pass and rushed for a 22-yard touchdown.

Towards the end of the 1st quarter, the Yellow Jackets scored making it a one-possession game. Donovan Riddick found Barry Hill in the middle of the field for a 43-yard touchdown.

Glenville started off the 2nd quarter by hitting a 40-yard field goal making it 17-7. West Virginia State's opening offensive drive ended abruptly with an interception. Mark Shepherd intercepted the pass for the Pioneers at the GSU 37. On fourth down Glenville went for it but could not convert.

Starting the drive in Pioneer territory, the Yellow Jackets made it a one-possession game again. This time Joel Felder scored for WV State on a five-yard run. Both offenses stalled out at the end of the half. Glenville would be in field goal range but missed the 29-yard attempt.

After starting the third quarter with the ball West Virginia State forced the Pioneers to punt. The Yellow Jackets drove the ball 72 yards to take the lead 21-17. Donovan once again connected deep with Barry Hill. With Mark Shepherd making the touchdown-saving tackle, Tavis McAdoo on a 2-yard rush found the endzone.

Glenville persevered and regained the lead in 13 seconds. Anthony Garrett connected with Javian Bellamy for a 73-yard touchdown. Both teams continued to trade blows in the third quarter. With 6:29 left on the clock, the Yellow Jackets tied the contest 24-24 with a 40-yard field goal. The Pioneers deep in West Virginia State territory would be stopped on fourth down. On fourth and five at the WV State 21, Garrett dropped back in the pocket but his pass was incomplete to Zay Huff,

Before the end of the quarter, the Yellow Jackets struck again. West Virginia State's rushing game caught fire during the drive. Donovan Riddick ran the ball in for a three-yard touchdown. However, the extra point would be blocked by Anthony Jordan.

Trailing 30-24 the Pioneers needed another touchdown to regain control of the game. Glenville's defense came up clutch in the fourth quarter making big plays. On third down Bob Jonjo sacked Riddick forcing WV State to punt the ball. The Pioneers on their next offensive drive were clicking on all cylinders. Both the pass and rushing attack made big plays. Zakee Swann broke off for a 20-yard run and Anthony Garrett threw for another touchdown pass.

Holding onto a 31-30 lead late the defense was called upon once more. Sean Scott intercepted Riddick's pass returning it into West Virginia State territory. With 5:26 left on the clock, the Pioneers strategically ran out the clock. Without Zay Huff's crucial catch on 4th and three, the Yellow Jackets would have gotten the ball back on their own 35-yard line.
