Glenville State Volleyball Set to Face the Yellow Jackets and Golden Eagles

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State's Women's Volleyball team is set for two matches this week. The Lady Pioneers host the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State Tuesday night and travel to the University of Charleston Friday. This will be the second meeting between both of these squads.

A Look at the Yellow Jackets

West Virginia State enters the match with an overall record of (22-4) and (9-3) in the Mountain East Conference. The Yellow Jackets are coached by Kris Kern who enters his sixth year with the program. Diamond'Nique Yong leads the team in kills this season with 283. Junior Setter Kierston Eggleton has proven to be an overall offensive threat for West Virginia State. Eggleton has accounted for 407 assists and 215 kills which is the second-highest on the team in each statistical category. Peri Martin leads the Yellow Jackets in assists with 409. Defensively for West Virginia State Darby Alex, Diamond'Nique Young, and Grace Martin have all been key contributors. Alex is currently in seventh in the MEC in digs with 275. Young leads the Yellow Jackets in blocks so far this season with 89 followed by Martin with 85. Both are in the top five in the MEC for blocks.

A Look at the Golden Eagles

The University of Charleston enters as the leader of the South Division with a record of (24-3) overall and (11-1) in the league. The Golden Eagles are coached by Tyler Kanelos who enters his second season as head coach. Since arriving to Charleston Kanelos has posted a record of  (46-14). During the 2022 campaign, two Golden Eagles have eclipsed the 275 kills mark. Sage Bearnson has produced 315 kills followed by McKenzie Damon with 275. Maria Hernandez has accounted for a conference-high 1,007 assists. Defensively the University of Charleston is led by Erin Carmody and Reagan McLean. Carmody currently sits third in the MEC in digs with 417. The Redshirt Freshman Reagan McLean has a conference-high in blocks with 114. 

Your Lady Pioneers

Glenville State enters the week with a (14-14) overall record and a (3-9) record in conference play. The Lady Pioneers are coming off of back-to-back heartbreaking losses to Notre Dame College and Alderson Broaddus. Coach Kevin John's program can still make the MEC tournament for the first time in school history. The Transfer Katarzyna Niderla has been electric for the Pioneers. Niderla leads the team in kills, service aces, hitting percentage, and blocks. GSU's freshmen have been great additions to the team as well. Nalaina Funk has had a great start to her Glenville career producing 61 blocks. Rita kelly is second in kills for the Pioneers with 205. Defensively Lindsay Winkelr, has a team-high in digs with 383 this season which is fifth in the MEC.
