Pioneer Football Completes the Comeback to Defeat the Falcons of Fairmont State 38-36

Glenville, W.Va. - The Battle for the Bit trophy is coming back to Glenville. The Pioneers were able to come back and get the win after trailing by ten at the half. Glenville finished the contest with 396 total yards of offense, which was 25 more than Fairmont State. However, the Pioneers committed seven more penalties than the Falcons.

The first quarter of Saturday afternoon's game would be a high-scoring affair with teams combing for 31 points. Starting at their own 27, Fairmont State struck first with a 27-yard field goal. Glenville on their first offensive drive of the game found the back of the endzone. A 10-yard rush by Zakee Swann set up the 20-yard touchdown pass to Javian Bellamy.

The Falcons with help from running back Myles Miree took another three-point lead. In less than one minute Anthony Garrett threw his second touchdown of the day. Zay Huff's 74-yard reception helped put the Pioneers in the red zone. Before the end of the first quarter, Fairmont State scored another touchdown taking a 17-14 lead.

Both offenses for most of the second quarter would be held in check. The Falcon's pass defense ended Glenville's first drive of the quarter with an interception. However, the Pioneer's defense responded by making two consecutive big plays. Sean Bowers started it off with a sack forcing a long 4th down. Having the ball at the GSU 31 Fairmont State decided to go for it, but
Brandon Penn produced the clutch pass breakup.

Glenville continued to make plays on the defensive side of the ball. Late in the second quarter, Bob Jonjo forced a fumble and Jacob Clark recovered it. A holding penalty on the Pioneers forced Glenville to punt giving the ball back to the Falcons with 1:57 left before halftime. Fairmont State would have enough time left on the clock to extend their lead 24-14.

On the opening drive of the second half, the Pioneers found the endzone making it a possessions game. During the drive, both the run and pass game would be effective. Once again Zakee Swann set up the touchdown pass from Anthony Garrett. The Pioneer's' defense continued from where they left off forcing Fairmont State to punt three consecutive punts. Before the end of the third quarter, Glenville would be in the red zone starting the fourth at the FSU six-yard line

Continuing the drive from the previous quarter, an 18-yard field goal from Josh Jones tied the game at 24-24. The Pioneer's defense continued to play at a high level in the fourth quarter. On the Falcon's next offensive drive, Brandon Penn blocked the field goal. Mark Shepherd recovered the block field goal and returned it for a touchdown giving Glenville State the lead 31-24. The Pioneers forced another turnover giving Coach Kellar's offense great field position. Anthony Garrett connected with Zay Huff on another deep ball making it a two-possession game with 10 minutes left.

While the Falcons' offense found its rhythm late in the fourth scoring twice, Glenville State did not panic and handled FSU's late surge. Special teams proved to be the deciding factor in the game. After the Falcon's first touchdown, they would miss the extra point. Forcing the Pioneers to punt Fairmont State drove the ball down the field scoring with 3:40 left on the clock. Down eight the Falcons would have to go for the two-point conversion. The Pioneer's special teams batted down Conner Neal's pass stopping Fairmont State. With needing tow first downs Glenville's offense was able to convert ending the game 38-36.

Freshman Anthony Garrett finished the day with four touchdowns, 257 passing yards, and one interception. Alfred Menjor led the Pioneers in rushing yards with 64. Zay Huff produced 135 receiving yards and one touchdown. Defensively Seth Arnold led Glenville in tackles with 13. Shaun Stering Jr. finished the game with nine tackles, two tackles for loss, and one interception.
