GSU Volleyball Travels North to face the Hilltoppers and Cardinals

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State's Women's Volleyball is set this weekend to face the Hilltoppers of West Liberty and North Division leaders Wheeling University. The Lady Pioneers match with West Liberty is Friday night at 7:00 PM and Saturday's contest will be against the Cardinals

A Look at the Hilltoppers

West Liberty enters Friday's match with a (12-8) record overall and (2-3) in the Mountain East Conference. The Hilltoppers are coming off a 3-0 loss to Wheeling University and is coached by Riley Schenk. Schenk enters her fourth season under the helm coming off a historic 2021 campaign. Ruby Countryman leads the Hilltoppers this season in kills with 165 followed by Senior Nina Billotto with 127. As a team, West Liberty has produced 120 service aces. Sophomore setter Haley Zeck has assisted a team-high 386 kills. Defensively, Nyia Setla leads the Hilltoppers and the MEC with 419 digs averaging 5.9 per set. West Liberty's Ruby Countryman has produced 73 blocks this season. 

A Look at the Cardinals

Wheeling University enters the match riding a ten-match win Streak. Under the direction of Christy Benner, the Cardinals' record is (12-6) overall and (5-0) in MEC play. Currently, Coach Benner's squad leads the MEC North Division and has been tested this season playing four teams inside the top 25. Junior Tylah Yeomans leads the Cardinals this season with 246 ranking her third in the MEC. Karly Niesen has 747 assists during the 2022 season which is the most in the MEC. Niesen averages 11.49 assist per set. As a team, Wheeling leads the conference in hitting percentage. Defensively, Berit Jones and Allonda Watkins have been solid for the Cardinals. Jones has produced a team-high in digs with 186. Watkins has been a strong presence in the middle creating 76 blocks.

The Lady Pioneers

Glenville enters this weekend with a (13-8) record overall and (2-3) in the MEC. The Lady Pioneers are off to a historic start under Kevin John. Glenville has eclipsed the 10-win mark for the first time since 2013. As a team, the Pioneers lead the conference on service aces. Katarzyna Niderla has produced 42 aces this season followed by Helín Halden. Niderla has paired her 42 aces during the 2022 campaign with a conference-high 251 kills and 61 blocks. Junior setter Sarah Grainger has accounted for a team-high 321 assists. Along with Niderla, Nalania Funk, Lindsay Winkler, and Zoe Schmidt have shined defensively for the Pioneers. Winkler leads Glenville in digs with 257 followed by Schmidt with 177. Freshman Nalania Funk has started her career as a Pioneer with 60 blocks.
