The Lady Pioneers Fall in the First Round of the MEC Tournament 3-0

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State's season comes to an end in the first round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament to the Cardinals of Wheeling University 3-0. The Lady Pioneers finished the 2022 season with a (16-17) record. Glenville finished the match with two more service aces than Wheeling. 

In the first set, both squads battled for the advantage resulting in six lead changes until the later half of the frame. Wheeling would jump out to an early 4-1 lead getting Tylah Yeomans involved early. The Lady Pioneers rattled off four straight points to take the lead 5-4. Glenville's Zoe Schmidt and Katarzyna Niderla both produced throughout the stretch. The Cardinals continued to fight back regaining the advantage 10-8. GSU pushed back taking six out of the next eight with help From Freshman Rita Kelly and Niderla. However, Wheeling after the 14-12 mark caught fire producing a dominant streak. A 13-3 run started by Allonda Watkins closed out the set for the Cardinals 25-17.

After dropping the first stanza, the Lady Pioneers opened the second set with a 7-3 lead. Taking advantage of errors made by Wheeling and back-to-back service aces helped give the Pioneers early momentum. Both teams once again throughout the early portion of the frame traded runs and the lead. This time 10-2 run by the Cardinals propelled Wheeling to take the second set 25-16. During the Cardinal's run, Glenville committed a total of six errors.

In the third and final frame, the Pioneers' only lead came at the 4-3 mark. Multiple times early on the Lady Pioneers brought it back to within one but could not tie the stanza. While Glenville trailed for most of the set, Wheeling's largest lead would only be seven points at 21-14. The Pioneers with a 5-1 run shrunk the Cardinals' lead late down to three points. Three consecutive kills by Rita Kelly helped Glenville during the run. Both squads continued to trade points until the end where Wheeling won 25-21.

Katarzyna Niderla led the Pioneers in kills with 12 followed by Zoe Schmidt with 10, Schmidt also produced nine digs. Both Helín Halden and Bryanne Tustin had two service aces. Junior setter Sarach Grianger accounted for 26 assists in today's match. Defensively, Senior Lindsay Winkler produced 16 digs followed by Sophie Shifferly with nine.
